This is a good podcast that covers the current week (like where we’re at), the recent past (like what got us where we are) and thoughts on future direction. Like a little lesson, wise reminders and opportunity ETF’s to look at.

The participants are all professional and appreciated. I tune in each week and have made decent mods and check-ups to my BMO ETF’s portfolio. The intro and summary guy is awesome, the host is awesome and the (usually) two guests are awesome.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E289 – What the 2025 Federal Budget Means for Investors
Q: Will the budget have a material impact on the Canadian stock market, and which industries or companies might see tailwinds from the proposed spending?
They note that infrastructure spending could benefit specific players in construction and services, but the overall TSX composition may limit direct gains for many sectors; oil and gas, along with pipelines and related infrastructure, are highlighted as more likely to respond, while many domestic producers may face a mixed picture depending on policy implementation and external demand.
E289 – What the 2025 Federal Budget Means for Investors
Q: What are your thoughts around this proposed budget, and will it lessen the current trade war and its impact on Canadians and Canadian industries?
The guests discuss how the budget attempts to address trade tensions by increasing openness and investment, while acknowledging uncertainties around tariffs and sovereignty; the balance between investing in long-term infrastructure and maintaining fiscal discipline is at the core of their view on potential benefits for Canada, with a cautious outlook on which sectors will actually see translated gains.
E316 – Rethinking US Equity Exposure
Q: What's the one big takeaway about US equity exposure for listeners today?
The core idea is to balance exposure across the market by using ZEQL to reduce concentration risk caused by mega-cap dominance, while still maintaining broad market exposure and allowing for targeted tilts through sector ETFs.
The Open Outcry: Examining Alts in Current Portfolio Construction
Q: Let's peel this back a little bit. What would be your adjudication process in terms of how you allocate towards low, medium, and high risk in a balanced portfolio?
I described two practical models: a growth model with a higher tilt toward medium and higher risk buckets and a balanced model oriented toward retirees with more conservative allocations. The core idea is to use a five-bucket framework (low, low-to-medium, medium, medium-to-high, high) and to blend across those buckets to achieve the desired risk-adjusted return, not by sticking strictly to traditional asset classes but by considering risk profiles, correlation, and liquidity. This approach allows including alts and OM products where appropriate, while avoiding over-concentration in the riskiest assets.
The Open Outcry: Looking for Upside Surprises in Equities Next Year
Q: How should investors think about diversification beyond traditional equities, including ALTS and gold?
ALTS can provide diversification and inflation protection over the long term, with infrastructure and hedge funds offering inflation hedges; gold remains a core defensive hedge and potential beneficiary if the dollar weakens.
