This show is both analysis and philosophy of extremely relevant issues to how our world has become. It is thought providing and dryly humorous. The host is eloquent, clever, and funny. The subjects chosen are fascinating. Overall, superb.

  • Academic yet personal

I’m a fan of the analytical nature of this podcast, where lots of facts are presented as is, with sparingly little, or often dry humor. My favorite parts are when the subject matter is so frustrating to both the listener and the speaker that Greg is heard grunting, cursing, or outright shouting at the subject for being so dumb, or at least intolerably inconsistent with reality or the subject’s worldview. This is a wonderful mixture of academic analysis and personal feelings of frustration I ofte... more

  • Fantastic

Wonderful synthesis of some of the most relevant theory, stuff informed people really need to pay attention to at this moment. Having this stuff broken down helps me see our world with clarity and feel less insane. Thanks.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A History of Violence w/ Patrick Wyman
Q: What is the relationship between the prominence of mercenary warfare and the relative strength of centralized power?
When centralized powers lose their grip, this releases violence workers into a private marketplace, leading to increased reliance on mercenaries for military actions as has been seen historically.
A History of Violence w/ Patrick Wyman
Q: How do you understand the term violence worker?
A violence worker is someone for whom doing violence is part of their job description, even if it is not the main goal; this includes mercenaries who are often engaged in security and territory control rather than active combat.
Combat 18, Part 1: Lad’s Army w/ Gareth Watkins
Q: Why cruelty?
Cruelty is a significant aspect of right-wing politics, as groups often use power primarily to harm outgroups, even at the risk of their own political stability.
Reign of Terror w/ Spencer Ackerman
Q: Could you talk a bit more about the transformation of the Democratic Party and its move away from its historical union and labor roots under Bill Clinton?
Ackerman elaborates on how the Democratic Party shifted away from labor roots towards a technocratic approach, which allowed for the expansion of the War on Terror and affected its electoral base.
Reign of Terror w/ Spencer Ackerman
Q: How do you understand both 9/11 and the global war on terror as both events and as an impetus for the politics that they would inaugurate?
Spencer discusses the pivotal nature of 9/11 in shaping a culture of violence as a response, replacing civic solidarity with a call for bloodshed worldwide.
