  • I love this podcast!!

I love that you bring out REAL black history. Not just the usual regurgitated stuff that we see played over and over every February for Black History Month. You are bringing out black history from all over the world every month of the year and I’m here for it. Sometimes I wish the episodes were longer but I still appreciate the bite sized digestible episodes, too. Everyone isn’t into history and so for those people the length probably is just right, but I hope you consider dropping some long for... more

  • While some info is based on credible sources. The creator of this podcast tends to fall into the snake oil salesman pitch of Afrocentrism. His podcasts on ancient historical figures such as imhotep have no connection whatsoever with the African diaspora. Imhotep and the Egyptians are north africans. The African diaspora originates in sub saharan west africa for example Nigeria, liberia etc etc.

Freeman's Challenge: The Untold Story of America's First Prison-for-Profit - New York Black History 1840-1846
Q: How do you see his experience resonating with contemporary issues of mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex?
There are so many resonances between the story that I'm telling about the 19th century and today. The most common response I've gotten is that this is so contemporary.
Freeman's Challenge: The Untold Story of America's First Prison-for-Profit - New York Black History 1840-1846
Q: During your research, what were some of the most surprising or challenging aspects of Freeman's story that you uncovered?
Freeman's story is a violent story. It's difficult to write about violence because you don't want to re-inscribe the violence but also do not want to trivialize it.
Freeman's Challenge: The Untold Story of America's First Prison-for-Profit - New York Black History 1840-1846
Q: What initially drew you to William Freeman's story, and why did you feel it was important to write this book?
I stumbled upon William Freeman's story by accident. It was in a footnote, and I got really interested when I learned that he had been incarcerated in the Auburn State Prison in 1840, where he had been leased as a convict.
Abakuá The Leopard's Roar
Q: What connections to other African diaspora traditions should I have mentioned?
The host seeks insights on the connections and influences of Abakua on other cultural traditions within the African diaspora.
