  • This podcast is Gold!

I love how real your conversations are. I’ve learned so much from how I have wired my brain to regulate my body yet never put into words the impact our actions have had on me and the people I’ve treated with chronic pelvic pain. Thank you for creating such a welcoming space to heal in!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 40: The Mind-Body Connection in Chronic Pain
Q: What was the turning point when the mind-body approach clicked for you?
She describes a turning point after a family member suggested mind-body involvement, plus reading material that mirrored her experiences, which helped her see symptoms as neuroplastic rather than purely structural.
Ep 40: The Mind-Body Connection in Chronic Pain
Q: Could you start by sharing who you are today and what brought you into this space?
Jen explains her background as a medical student and resident focused on internal medicine, and how personal neuroplastic symptoms and a shift in perspective led her to explore mind-body approaches and neuroplastic pain research.
Ep 50: Chronic Pain Recovery Without Surgery: The DOC Journey Explained by Dr David Hanscom
Q: What would you tell someone starting this journey?
Start with one structured program, commit for three to six months, and avoid jumping between approaches. Learn the problem, embrace skepticism about quick fixes, and practice the skills daily to gradually retrain the nervous system toward safety and joy.
Ep 50: Chronic Pain Recovery Without Surgery: The DOC Journey Explained by Dr David Hanscom
Q: What are the core skills or steps you teach in your program?
Core skills include education about why symptoms are explained by physiology, expressive writing to process thoughts, active meditation to reset attention, prioritizing sleep, and reducing negative input. The program also emphasizes non-attachment to pain, building resilience through diet and exercise, breathwork to stimulate the vagus nerve, and fostering joy and social connection to change brain chemistry.
Ep 50: Chronic Pain Recovery Without Surgery: The DOC Journey Explained by Dr David Hanscom
Q: Can you share a little bit about who you are and what brought you into this space?
I came from a high-stress spine surgery background and then experienced my own decade-long struggle with anxiety and OCD, which led me to realize that chronic pain is largely a mind-body and physiology issue rather than purely structural pathology. My work now focuses on teaching people how to move from threat to safety through education, behavior changes, and self-directed programs like the DOC Journey.
