  • Insightful, entertaining, and clear!

Have currently listened to 7 episodes so far, and I have learned so much!

This podcast doesn’t just cover the facts (which can be dry!), but also importantly discusses the historiography and influence in both the modern and ancient world of the episode’s topic. Professor Jacobs is engaging and entertaining, and his perspectives are incredibly insightful. Highly highly recommend! I am of Chinese descent, and this podcast is helping me learn more about my heritage. Thank you!

  • Heavy on vibes, light on details

If this truly reflects the level of American college level history, I despair. Jacobs gives incessant wishy washy “context” (mainly just his imagination) about what life was like then, with zero sources, and vanishingly few concrete details. The episode on Confucius is a case in point. Long, meaningless preamble full of diversions - and nothing on the basic facts of when he lived, what he said and why it was important.

  • Annoying guy

I listened to like 20 minutes of the "Religion in Ancient China" episode and was pretty turned off by it. In my opinion taking the belief systems of ancient people seriously and on their own term is generally more rewarding than approaching everything with a smug ironic distance but what do I know I’m not the one with a successful podcast ("okay????").
