What might have been an interesting and informative interview was deficient regarding the central issue in Rachel’s departure from Aish HaTorah. The interviewer who overly identified with his subject was glaringly unsophisticated and lacking in both interview skill and knowledge of the subject matter, and was of no help to his subject and more importantly his audience. There are a number of examples one could cite but the use of the word “cult” is left unexplained and is used only as a epithet t... more

  • Insightful

As someone raised by atheist parents, this podcast has given me a lens into a different world. I’ve watched a lot of documentaries about people who have left religion (typically in extreme cult-forms), but listening to conversations on the topic hits it from a different angle. Excellent interviewer, too.

Carl: Former Christian Scientist
Q: What did you find helped you deconstruct perceptions regarding Christian Science?
It helped you deconstruct perceptions. You have to use the limited words you have to get across that concept, which forces you to think of that concept in a different way.
Carl: Former Christian Scientist
Q: Is there a central leadership in Christian Science?
Well, there's a reason Mark Twain called it Maggala Mania Gone Mad. There's a whole control mechanism of a mother church in Boston which controls all the other churches throughout the world.
Carl: Former Christian Scientist
Q: What was it like to grow up in this environment for you?
It was an environment full of contradiction because if you're a true Christian Scientist, you won't use medicine, you won't drink, you won't think badly about people, but you need medicine, you need to eat.
Mike: Former Zionist
Q: What would be your advice to someone going through this emotional deconstruction process?
Give yourself permission for the process to take as long as it takes and seek community support.
Mike: Former Zionist
Q: What was the impetus in the last year that cracked things up?
The date of October 7th marked a radicalizing moment that forced Mike to seek a deeper understanding of the conflict.
