Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

SB 11. Volunteering at the Walker Cup, Inside the Ropes at the BMW, Rock Creek Park GC, Latest in the DMV
Q: What were your first impressions of getting access to Cypress Point before the main rounds?
It felt surreal and intimate, walking the course with almost no ropes, seeing greens and tees up close, and meeting the ground crew who were generous with access and stories.
SB 11. Volunteering at the Walker Cup, Inside the Ropes at the BMW, Rock Creek Park GC, Latest in the DMV
Q: So you signed up to volunteer at the Walker Cup, how long ago?
It was several months ago, possibly six to eight months, and we got in off the wait list, with a credential and shifts lined up for the event, including merch tent duties.
Ep 95. Ryan McCarthy – Argyle CC
Q: How did Argyle approach the recent renovations and keep costs from going to members?
The renovation was financed without member assessments by refinancing debt and selling a cell phone tower on the property, which provided the capital to fund an irrigation upgrade, Bermuda conversion, and bunkering. The project required phased work with a short overall shutdown, and it maintained playability for most of the season.
Ep 95. Ryan McCarthy – Argyle CC
Q: What has your golf career looked like, from college through today, and how has Argyle shaped it?
I started golf really young at Argyle, went to Gonzaga, then Loyola, and stayed active as an amateur and mid-amateur. Argyle has been my home club since childhood, with a strong junior program that helped develop talent and keep golf fun with a large group of players around, which pushed me to improve. The club's junior membership and access to facilities allowed me to stay competitive while balancing family life.
88. Joel Weiman – Weiman Design Group
Q: Can you go a little bit deeper into the timeline and process of Woodmont's South Course renovation?
The relationship with Woodmont started around 12 years ago with a master plan for the North Course, followed by a master plan for the South. The South renovation began about four to five years ago, with six holes renovated annually over three years, and a loop feature built during a summer break. The process was iterative, involving long-term planning, club input, and phased execution.
