What if we've misunderstood the Inklings?

When most of us think of the Inklings, we picture C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien: two brilliant minds meeting in an Oxford pub and changing literature forever. But that's only one part of a much bigger story... more

We love a good vampire yarn, or speculating about how we would react to a zombie apocalypse. Pop culture loves them too: vampires sexy, zombies scary. But what is the value in telling these kinds of stories? Is there more to it than just Hollywood tr... more

  • Good Topic but...

Too much giggling. The topic of Naming was quite interesting and I wanted to hear what Lancia Smith had to say, but all the gratuitous giggling became so annoying that I gave up listening half-way through. Maybe sip your wine AFTER the discussion.

  • A Welcome Refuge

Dec. 7,2023 What a heartwarming look at friendships! With one difference . . .

tho’ it’s hard for you to imagine how people have such skewed views of friendship, I lived several painfully skewed years. Children and teens fed a steady diet of Elvis and James Bond movies, and a lack of classic literature may not even realize there are other options. It scrambles your brain and your emotions, taking years to realize and rewire. Thanking God for the welcome mentoring and refuge of the Anselm perspe... more

Talking Points

The Saints As Stand-Up Comedians
Q: Do you think stand-up is having a moment in culture today, or has it always been central to our conversation?
The guest suggests that stand-up has grown into a central cultural force in the last couple of decades, especially with streaming and podcasts, but also notes that its deeper role is in expressing moral and religious longings and in revealing truth through humor.
The Bible Is a Story About Dragons
Q: How do dragons function in the Bible and in the Dragon Slayer Series?
Dragons symbolize chaos and evil but also participate in creation narratives when viewed through the ancient Near Eastern context; in the Dragon Slayer Series, Jesus embodies the dragon-slaying victory and the characters are positioned to join a larger mission in the world's story.
The Bible Is a Story About Dragons
Q: What is the Dragon Slayer Bible Series and who is the target audience?
It's adventure-packed biblical fiction and devotions for kids around 8 to 12, with a focus on boys who are drawn to battles, heroism, and a larger spiritual war represented by the Dragon Slayer who fights the dragon. The series uses biblical chronology to frame a dragon-centered quest that points toward Jesus as the ultimate Dragon Slayer.
Our Stories Need "Undaunted Joy"
Q: Why do you think it's so important that joy be undaunted?
It's so counter-cultural. It's fighting for joy despite challenges and cultural pressures trying to scare us into not living fully.
Our Stories Need "Undaunted Joy"
Q: So let's start with the big picture. Give us the elevator pitch. What's your book about?
It is a collection of essays on joy and sometimes in the mundane and in the magnificent. I argue that joy is from God, it's transcendent.
