Q: What are some of the ways you cope now with big emotions?
I try to take a few minutes to just calm myself down, and when stressed, I use cannabis to help me take stock of my feelings.

I immediately found a therapist and went into a day program, which helped me learn that my reactions weren't abnormal but that I needed better tools to cope with my emotions.

Yes, I did make an attempt in 2010 after a series of significant losses and uncertainty in my life.

Q: What was the mental illness that you felt like your family was not confronting, not taking head on?
My grandmother suffered with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and rather than getting her help, which may have been a function of the time, it was the 1940s, mental illness, mental health were viewed with suspicion, if nothing else, and it was very difficult to get treatment at that point.

Q: Did you reach out to anybody at any point during this relationship?
Yes, Jess was in therapy for most of her adult life and relied on friends for support.
