  • Banal Self Promotion

I’ve listened to episode one and it’s staggering how loquacious finance people are. The whole episode is just a verbose and vapid self promotion with no meaningful financial insights or deeper interesting educational points. It’s just waffling jovial banter with no substance. The whole thing could be summarized as, “You can totally trust me! Look how charismatic and fun loving I am”. This guy should be a politician, he answered questions for an hour and said nothing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The biggest shift in financial advice history is less than 2 years away
Q: In five years time, what does an advice practices tech stack actually look like?
The stack collapses to a single source of truth; AI handles drafting, reporting, and portfolio updates while humans interpret the 'why' and guide client decisions, with connectors to other tools and a modular ecosystem.
Why financial advice has become generic (and how to actually stand out)
Q: What about the role of events and referrals in growth?
Events with high-quality speakers and curated networks drive introductions and referrals, with a 'tell not sell' approach complemented by partnerships with referral sources.
Why financial advice has become generic (and how to actually stand out)
Q: What are some tips that you have for advisors so they can differentiate themselves?
Focus on high-touch, hyper-personalized service, learn from outside the industry, and systematize a culture of excellence with regular reviews and recognition.
Why financial advice has become generic (and how to actually stand out)
Q: What do you mean by that—personalization and differentiation?
Will emphasizes that differentiation comes from private markets exposure, thoughtful portfolio construction, and a superior client experience rather than chasing beta alone.
Lessons from David Swensen: Equity bias, alignment of interest & why boring is beautiful
Q: Talk us through the chart you brought along.
The chart highlights Morningstar's findings that active funds can outperform passive ones in Australian small-mid cap spaces over multi-year horizons, illustrating the value of selecting a good 25th percentile active manager and showing how fees and active selection can materially impact outcomes for investors.
