Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Processing uncertainty in real time
Q: How do AI and related capex trends influence your market outlook?
AI is a game-changer for productivity, with broad implications across services, finance, and tech; however, Ajay cautions that AI alone may not deflate inflation in the near term and the big impact will depend on practical adoption and macro transmission.
Processing uncertainty in real time
Q: What would cause you to adjust forecasts in the near term, particularly regarding oil?
A sustained oil price above $100 for six months would prompt a revision in forecasts for the US and Europe, signaling a shift in expected inflation and growth dynamics.
Processing uncertainty in real time
Q: What's your framework for evaluating it all, given the mix of geopolitics and macro signals?
Ajay emphasizes looking at transmission mechanisms—how price signals and real-world actions propagate through economies—while focusing on long-run drivers like AI-led productivity and the potential for moderation of inflation credibility if policy remains credible.
A bullish view on US equities
Q: Why are you cautiously optimistic about US risk assets despite elevated energy costs and tight de-rating?
Because US corporate margins are materially higher than a decade ago, earnings momentum remains robust, and the oil shock is more about the rate of change than the level, supported by a strong domestic energy position and ongoing AI-driven capex.
A bullish view on US equities
Q: What has surprised you most about the sector moves in the last few weeks?
The guest points to aggressive rotations away from momentum and into value or cyclicals, with a particular emphasis on commodity and energy-linked themes due to the decoupling narrative, while noting that liquidity mismatches across regions amplify volatility.
