AI goes economy-wide
Q: What are the implications for labor and capital from this combined AI scenario, especially regarding wages and the distribution of income?
While automation has historically not caused mass unemployment, the balance could shift with AI, potentially increasing the share of income going to capital and raising the neutral real interest rate, as both automation and capital expenditure demand rise.
AI goes economy-wide
Q: How would you position your view in amongst all of the research published on the impact of AI on productivity?
We argue that the biggest gains come from targeting specific tasks with high productivity potential from generative AI and then aggregating those gains to the sector level, rather than assuming uniform, economy-wide improvements.
Decoding the bond sell-off
Q: What concerns are driving UK gilt volatility beyond the immediate energy-price story?
Political uncertainty around Labour leadership and future fiscal spending is injecting risk premia at the long end of the gil market, alongside the ongoing impact from the Middle East tensions.
Decoding the bond sell-off
Q: What did the ECB signal, and how has that affected the curve?
The ECB signaled a focus on the inflationary impact of the Iran war, leading to bear flattening in euro rates; later, Lagarde highlighted tightened financial conditions and tempered expectations for aggressive hikes, reducing the likelihood of extreme front-end moves.
Decoding the bond sell-off
Q: What's going on with global bond yields and what's driving the move?
