Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jet fuel shortage: Holidays at risk?
Q: So can you set the scene on whether jet fuel shortages are a genuine risk or overblown?
While the airline industry faces ongoing crises, this situation is serious but not an endless lockdown; Europe is more exposed due to imports and refinery closures, yet the US is relatively better positioned and Asia remains heavily dependent on Gulf kerosene, with substantial uncertainty about timelines.
Inflation crosscurrents: Energy vs AI
Q: Is this inflation shock likely to be as painful as 2022?
The view is that conditions are different: policy rates are higher, the labor market is softer, and there is no active QE, making a sustained, persistent shock less likely, though near-term energy-driven volatility will matter.
The cusp of a capex supercycle
Q: Where does the AI capex cycle sit in historical context compared with previous booms?
Historically, AI-related investment is now competing with and likely exceeding the scale of past cycles like the railroad expansion, the telecoms boom, and the Apollo era; the current hyperscale investment is among the largest, indicating a very large, multi-year cycle.
Processing uncertainty in real time
Q: How do AI and related capex trends influence your market outlook?
AI is a game-changer for productivity, with broad implications across services, finance, and tech; however, Ajay cautions that AI alone may not deflate inflation in the near term and the big impact will depend on practical adoption and macro transmission.
Processing uncertainty in real time
Q: What would cause you to adjust forecasts in the near term, particularly regarding oil?
A sustained oil price above $100 for six months would prompt a revision in forecasts for the US and Europe, signaling a shift in expected inflation and growth dynamics.
