  • So motivated to plan my retirement!

I’m only 51 and probably won’t retire until I’m 65. But I’ve been really careless with my money up to this point and I’m ready to start getting my ducks in a row so I can plan to have a financially comfortable retirement. This podcast has really inspired me!

  • Only just started listening (little late to the party)

But, I will say, that as I approach (actually gone way past preservation age) retirement age I wish I had found this years ago.

Retirement planning and superannuation are simply too confusing for uneducated muppets like me.

Keep up the good work, I can heartily recommend this for EVERYBODY who is working and plans to retire one day.

Why advice takes ten weeks, and how to test-drive your retirement budget
Q: What are the benefits of test driving my retirement budget now, and how much buffer should I include for health care costs before qualifying for a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card?
Test driving your budget helps reveal true spending, pressures from lifestyle choices, and the real gap between income and required expenses in retirement. It encourages faster decision-making, highlights where you can trim costs, and can prevent delaying retirement by showing the exact funding needed. As for health costs, a buffer should consider longer-term expectations beyond immediate pre-retirement needs, focusing on total costs across 10–20+ years rather than the single pre-retirement window to ensure the plan remains resilient.
Should you pay off the mortgage or boost super first in your 50s?
Q: What about catch-up concessional contributions for someone who is 48 with a promotion and 130k in super?
They advise that catch-up concessional contributions can be a powerful lever for someone in that position, enabling a lump sum contribution and a tax deduction, provided the person verifies their limits via MyGov/ATO and consults an adviser to optimize the strategy.
Should you pay off the mortgage or boost super first in your 50s?
Q: At what age would you start focusing on super over mortgage, and does this depend on the mortgage term?
They indicate that starting earlier can be beneficial, with mid to late 40s being a potential window for some to begin prioritizing super, especially if the mortgage will be long-lasting and interest rates or tax rules make the strategy compelling. The decision hinges on confidence in the super system and personal redraw capacity.
Should you pay off the mortgage or boost super first in your 50s?
Q: What is the best approach for a couple in their 50s with a large mortgage—continue paying down the mortgage or prioritize super contributions?
The hosts suggest that for some 50-somethings with a big mortgage, prioritizing maxing deductible contributions into super can yield a day-one tax benefit and, over time, a larger super balance to access at retirement, potentially reducing mortgage implications later. However, they acknowledge it depends on individual cash flow, mortgage terms, and the ability to manage risk and liquidity.
Recession with higher inflation - should retirees panic? Plus the key to retirement
Q: What is the most important retirement conversation families should have before turning 70?
The panel emphasizes estate planning and transparency about assets and intentions to prevent conflicts and preserve pension eligibility as people age.
