  • Great show, keep up the good work

Awesome show, been listening for many years. I see too many podcasters give up and I just wanted to thank you for your hard work and dedication. You have made commutes, road-trips and restless nights great again. If you want to learn about flood tide carp fishing on the Colorado river, lmk. The river goes from 100cfs to 2500-4000cfs daily in my neck of the woods in Texas and all the 15-30 lb big boys go up into the flooded grass. Check me out IG @johnnyiswright

  • Needs better equipment

I have three gripes with this podcast - first and foremost, the sound quality is terrible. This would have been par for the course in 2011, but podcasting has come a long way, and it doesn’t have to sound like you’re listening in on a long distance telephone call with a bad connection anymore. Second, the interviewer is CONSTANTLY interrupting his guests (maybe due to a lag?). Over and over, the guest will be mid sentence and dropping some good info, and then they’ll get interrupted, awkward pa... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Fly Fisher’s Road Trip Across California
Q: Which fishery would you call California's crown jewel and why?
Vinci cites a balance of scenery and quality of fishery, suggesting Fall River and Hot Creek as standout examples due to their stunning landscapes, year-round fishing potential, and the technical challenges they present, with additional emphasis on the Upper Sacramento River as a historically pivotal water for fly patterns and a wide range of species.
A Fly Fisher’s Road Trip Across California
Q: What makes California such a unique destination for fly fishing compared to other trout states?
Greg Vinci explains that California offers nearly every recreational fish species across a broad climatic and geological spectrum, with a year-round potential on many waters and a mix of coastal, desert, and mountain habitats that create varied fishing experiences and challenging, technical fisheries.
Topwater to Bottom: Cracking the Code on Smallmouth Bass
Q: How do you decide which fly to start with in topwater versus subsurface scenarios?
Observations and the current conditions drive the choice; if sun is high and fish are cruising, topwater or crayfish patterns; in skinnier water or bright sun, switch to subsurface crayfish, helgramites, or nymphs to trigger bites.
Topwater to Bottom: Cracking the Code on Smallmouth Bass
Q: What tactics do you suggest for targeting smallmouth in clear and low water during the summer, including leaders and flies?
Use longer and smaller leaders, go subsurface when needed, and combine floating lines with light fluorocarbon leaders to slow the presentation and keep the fly in the fish's window longer.
A Fishable Feast: Fly Fishing and Eating Your Way Around the World
Q: What inspired you guys to write this book, put it together, and how did it come about?
The idea grew from a collaboration between Matt and Kirk Dieter, merging Matt's deep fly fishing experience with culinary and travel storytelling; their shared backgrounds in hospitality and cooking helped fuse fly fishing with global cuisine and photography into a single, accessible concept.
