  • Incredibly Valuable Podcast. Thank you Steve!

I discovered Art of the Cut a couple of days ago and I have quickly become obsessed. The Mission Impossible, Asteroid City, Yellowstone, and Tar episodes blew my mind with how much insightful information they packed. I’m a film student and I have learned as much if not more from one episode of this pod than I have from entire semesters of some of my classes. The podcast isn’t just educational either, it’s a real pleasure listening to Steve and his guests talk editing and film.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
Q: How did the masked main character influence editorial decisions?
The absence of a visible face required focusing on micro-expressions, performance shifts, and other cues like body language and framing to convey emotion and narrative intent, which also empowered editors to fix or adjust story beats without relying on dialogue.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
Q: What was the value of editing on set and why was it necessary?
Editing on set served as the central hub for information, enabling the editors to align all departments early, review footage quickly, and keep production decisions tightly connected to storytelling needs.
The Devil Wears Prada 2
Q: Tell me how that relationship started and what it's like now that you've done a couple of projects with him.
Marcus explains he's collaborated with David Frankel on multiple projects, describing a shorthand and trust that develops over time, with the director valuing a team approach and the editor maintaining a balance between freedom and direction.
THE DRAMA
Q: Tell me about how it's different editing with a director than editing for a director.
The directors' collaboration was highly iterative; with two editors, they could run rapid, side-by-side experiments, chase ideas, and rely on direct feedback to push scenes toward a more dynamic, nonlinear structure, while maintaining a clear throughline for performance and emotion.
Project Hail Mary
Q: Did you read the book before you either got hired or before you started editing?
Joel explains that he read most of the book after being hired, supplemented by listening during commutes, and used that understanding to shape the film's pacing and emotional tone.
