  • Incredibly Valuable Podcast. Thank you Steve!

I discovered Art of the Cut a couple of days ago and I have quickly become obsessed. The Mission Impossible, Asteroid City, Yellowstone, and Tar episodes blew my mind with how much insightful information they packed. I’m a film student and I have learned as much if not more from one episode of this pod than I have from entire semesters of some of my classes. The podcast isn’t just educational either, it’s a real pleasure listening to Steve and his guests talk editing and film.

THE DRAMA
Q: Tell me about how it's different editing with a director than editing for a director.
The directors' collaboration was highly iterative; with two editors, they could run rapid, side-by-side experiments, chase ideas, and rely on direct feedback to push scenes toward a more dynamic, nonlinear structure, while maintaining a clear throughline for performance and emotion.
Project Hail Mary
Q: Did you read the book before you either got hired or before you started editing?
Joel explains that he read most of the book after being hired, supplemented by listening during commutes, and used that understanding to shape the film's pacing and emotional tone.
HOPPERS
Q: How do you approach pacing and structure during editing, especially when moving scenes or flashbacks around?
Geddes describes trimming, testing, and stress-testing the edit across acts, noting that moving scenes and flashbacks can illuminate emotional beats or reveal the necessity of certain sequences, with readiness to accept changes and learn from the outcomes.
HOPPERS
Q: Do you have a favorite part of the process?
Geddes explains that he enjoys the entire pipeline and values the ability to influence the film from storyboards through final animation, emphasizing the importance of just staying engaged and listening to the movie as it evolves.
KPOP Demon Hunters
Q: How did you handle intercutting and pacing during the busiest musical sequences like Soda Pop or the Get Ready montage?
We cut to the beat, sometimes slightly before it so the audience perceives the cut as synchronized with the music, while also ensuring dialogue and character beats aren't sacrificed.
