  • Incredibly Valuable Podcast. Thank you Steve!

I discovered Art of the Cut a couple of days ago and I have quickly become obsessed. The Mission Impossible, Asteroid City, Yellowstone, and Tar episodes blew my mind with how much insightful information they packed. I’m a film student and I have learned as much if not more from one episode of this pod than I have from entire semesters of some of my classes. The podcast isn’t just educational either, it’s a real pleasure listening to Steve and his guests talk editing and film.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

THE STUDIO
Q: When you are judging for Emmys or Ace Eddies, how do you judge editing?
Eric reflects on the complexity of judging editing, suggesting that while a good product may seem the metric, the true artistry of an editor is often hidden in the contributions made to support the director's vision, making it difficult to pinpoint their specific impact.
THE STUDIO
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about how your directing skills play into your editing skills?
Eric explains that his experience as a director helps him approach scenes with a comprehensive understanding, allowing for better communication with the creative team and an appreciation of the chaotic nature of film set production, which in turn informs his editing.
THE ACCOUNTANT 2
Q: Were there additional women that we didn't get to see?
I think there was just one more woman, but she was also given the similar content as one of the others.
THE ACCOUNTANT 2
Q: Talk to me about what you did as an editor to enhance that idea, either increasing awkward pauses or blazing through, you know, his incredibly fast ability to think.
It's a little bit of all those things, playing with how he interacts with people or doesn't interact with people.
The PENGUIN LESSONS
Q: How do you balance that and how do you choose shot size, especially in a comedy scene?
Traditionally, comedy plays best in the wide, but sometimes it's better to focus on an actor's expression; thus, shot size is less rigid than before.
