Only listened to the brutalist episode, but I don’t how three separate people could miss the mark on a movie so badly. Hopefully you all are better at interpreting architecture than you are at understanding movies. No sense of history, no appreciation of filmmaking/acting as a craft, and a complete inability to think critically about what the film could be conveying beyond what is being presented on the screen. It’s like the movie was on in the background while you scrolled your phone.

Thank you for this takedown of The Brutalist. It was very cathartic; I feel like I'm by punked by all these glowing reviews... Like, did we watch the same bloated, disjointed film??
And your taste continues in your other film recs: I haven't seen Martha, but A Real Pain and The Seed of the Sacred Fig are fantastic.
I hope those architecture films you pitched do get made. That's what I was hoping for from this one.

I could not be more grateful for your analysis of The Brutalist. I was elated to watch the movie and was beyond disappointed (mostly for the “protagonist’s” offputting perversions as a woman), but the lack of historical context was fascinating to learn about as well. They don’t even show what he was fleeing, so why not base the completely fictional movie off of the legitimate founders of Brutalism? There is such lackluster for this scale of a film and I cannot believe that there are positive ... more
