  • Critical listen

Absolutely critical examination of the true culture of Appalachia. So important to debunk stereotypes about our region and lift up voices that may seem unexpected to people outside of the area. A must listen if you want to have your thumb on the pulse of Appalachia.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#261: How NOT to tell the story of extraction in Appalachia
Q: What steps did GRIT take to engage with the Queens Museum, and what outcomes did they seek from the collaboration?
GRIT sent a formal letter outlining issues, sought an apology and inclusion of Appalachian voices through didactics and public programs, and pressed for equitable collaboration rather than a quid pro quo involving the artists' own work.
#261: How NOT to tell the story of extraction in Appalachia
Q: What are some of the reasons Appalachian art has historically been appropriated, and how does that shape the current installation?
Ali Printz discusses historical suppression of Appalachian voices via outsider narrators, the misuse of regional imagery, and the perpetuation of stereotypes, which underscores why an outsider-led project can feel inauthentic or exploitative.
#259: East Palestine Train Derailment: 3 years later
Q: What has been the government response in the aftermath of this?
The government response has been inadequate, with ongoing health issues among residents and a lack of support for their healthcare needs.
#259: East Palestine Train Derailment: 3 years later
Q: What exactly happened with that train derailment, who was involved?
A train derailed carrying vinyl chloride and other hazardous chemicals, which resulted in massive fires and toxic chemical release. The decision to open burn the chemicals worsened the situation significantly.
#257: F**k ICE
Q: How did you get to that point? And what drew you to finally take that plunge?
I kept being drawn to comedy, even though I hesitated at first due to fear of failing. Eventually, the desire to try it became too strong, and I did my first open mic, which led me to pursue comedy more seriously over the years.
