  • Fragile masculinity history

It’s like listening to a high-school wrestler stammer and pontificate about things he doesn’t understand that he doesn’t understand.

  • For serious history lovers

Dives deep into ancient history. Not the usual history 101 served up by many other podcasts. I enjoy the unique authors that have researched their subjects beyond simple facts. Like I said, deep. Well spoken, completely professional production.

Best part is learning so much about our favorite subject. That’s exciting!

  • Work in progress

The host does an admirable job of presenting a wide range of authors and experts on various areas of ancient history. Further, no ideology is included. Just a discussion of ancient history.

Unfortunately, the host asks rambling, run on questions (inevitably including “you know,“ and “I guess”) which are unprofessional and distracting. The podcast would be far better if concise, insightful questions were asked which would prompt more thoughtful responses from the interviewees.

#70 - Lost tales of King Arthur & Merlin (w/ Irene Fabry-Tehranchi)
Q: Is there anything else you think the audience should know about King Arthur and Merlin?
The legends mix historical and mythical elements, transmitted orally before being recorded in literature much later.
#70 - Lost tales of King Arthur & Merlin (w/ Irene Fabry-Tehranchi)
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the discovery and what you've been working on?
We discovered a fragment of a medieval manuscript related to Merlin, which was previously uncatalogued and found in the archives.
#69 - Plato, Tyranny, and the Origins of Western Thought (w/ James Romm)
Q: Do you think knowing these episodes in his life has given you a better understanding of the Republic?
Very much so. The Republic is a masterpiece, and I do see ways in which it was another way of explaining himself to the republic.
#69 - Plato, Tyranny, and the Origins of Western Thought (w/ James Romm)
Q: What drew you to write this book?
It's a story that, number one, it's well attested by the first-person testimony of Plato, so that, to me, was irresistible.
#68 - Alexander the Great: Monsoons & Mutinies in Mysterious Lands (w/ Rachel Kousser)
Q: What ultimately stopped Alexander and his army from going even further than they did?
Kousser explains that it was Alexander's army that ultimately halted their march, exhausted from the long campaign and facing the challenges of monsoons and difficult terrain in India.
