  • I’d Merlot It

The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool. This pod personifies that.

SideChats: Ana Asensio - "Goat Girl" Writer/Director
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers working on autobiographical projects with low budgets?

SideChats: Ana Asensio - "Goat Girl" Writer/Director
Q: What role did editing play in shaping the story?
The editor's initial cut led Ana to add a personal voiceover later, which helped bridge memory and imagination, and provided a pathway to a more intimate, subjective experience of childhood.
SideChats: Ana Asensio - "Goat Girl" Writer/Director
Q: How did the filmmaking process shape the final look and feel of the film?
The discussion covers emulating 1980s Kodak textures, strategic close-ups, and an aspect-ratio shift to reflect the protagonist's expanding perception, plus dream sequences with a distinct texture.
SideChats: Ana Asensio - "Goat Girl" Writer/Director
Q: Why set the film in 1988 Madrid and include real contemporary events?
She wanted a concrete, realistic setting that could illuminate a coming-of-age story, using May 1988 Madrid and events like ETA bombings to deepen the atmosphere while viewing news through a child's eyes for emotional impact.
SideChats: Ana Asensio - "Goat Girl" Writer/Director
Q: What drew you to tell stories visually, and how did your background influence Goat Girl?
Ana explains that acting initially drew her to storytelling, but writing and directing offered a path to create opportunities for herself as an immigrant Spanish woman in New York, leading to Goat Girl as a luminous, personal project.
