  • Unsporty convert

As the one who’d make excuses not to participate as a child, my life has gradually become more sporty as a mum raising two kids who are mad for it. I’m having a late in life sports awakening following women’s soccer (due to my daughter) and a becoming devoted ParkRunner after a lifetime believing I couldn’t run. So this podcast fits right in, love the sports commentary, love the advice on managing sporty kids and keeping me on an even keel not enrolling them in every academy available - you’ve s... more

  • Wanted to like this one more than I did

Libby Trickett’s accomplishments in the pool were amazing and definitely drew me to this podcast. While I appreciate her honesty, I do not appreciate her bad language and gutter talk. Also, she comes across as a “fan girl” so much that I am starting to wonder if any of it is genuine. Hearing the life perspectives of former athletes is an interesting angle for a podcast. However, this podcast became a bit formulaic to me.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TEEN ATHLETE SERIES: Food and Sport with Sports Dietitian Ali Miles
Q: How can parents support breakfast routines when mornings are rushed?
Start small with something like an apricot bite or a juice popper, then gradually scale up to more balanced options like toast with peanut butter or yogurt and fruit, always focusing on consistency and gradual progression.
TEEN ATHLETE SERIES: Food and Sport with Sports Dietitian Ali Miles
Q: What are the basics you want every teen to get right before considering optimization?
The basics are three meals a day with two to three snacks, including carbohydrates, protein, and fats, while avoiding overcomplication and helping teens gradually increase intake as training demands grow.
TEEN ATHLETE SERIES: Food and Sport with Sports Dietitian Ali Miles
Q: Why is it so challenging for parents to fuel teens and navigate the social media noise around nutrition?
Because there is a flood of mixed messages from media and unqualified sources, and teens are influenced by social media opinions, while parents juggle guilt, time, and the practical realities of feeding a growing body.
TEEN ATHLETE SERIES: The concussion questions that keep us up at night
Q: Can you sort of outline for us what the different terms are and how we should be using them when we discuss this issue of sport?
Head trauma can range from incidental head knocks to concussion, with concussion defined as a transient disturbance of neurological function, and repeated head trauma raising long-term brain health concerns; management emphasizes recognition, removal from play, and cautious return.
A wake-up call for Australian women's sport
Q: Amanda, before we jump into the reporting that you've obviously been doing around women's sport, we wanted to ask you about your own relationship with sport and how that looks in your everyday life.
Amanda discusses her lifelong involvement with sport and journalism, emphasising the importance of reporting on women's sport in Australia, and how her experiences shaped the way she approaches coverage and storytelling.
