As the one who’d make excuses not to participate as a child, my life has gradually become more sporty as a mum raising two kids who are mad for it. I’m having a late in life sports awakening following women’s soccer (due to my daughter) and a becoming devoted ParkRunner after a lifetime believing I couldn’t run. So this podcast fits right in, love the sports commentary, love the advice on managing sporty kids and keeping me on an even keel not enrolling them in every academy available - you’ve s... more

  • Wanted to like this one more than I did

Libby Trickett’s accomplishments in the pool were amazing and definitely drew me to this podcast. While I appreciate her honesty, I do not appreciate her bad language and gutter talk. Also, she comes across as a “fan girl” so much that I am starting to wonder if any of it is genuine. Hearing the life perspectives of former athletes is an interesting angle for a podcast. However, this podcast became a bit formulaic to me.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

PLAY WELL: Gen Muir wants to teach you how to be a better sideline parent
Q: What is one thing you want every parent to know about kids and sport?
The relationship with the child matters more than the outcome of any game; give space for their journey to unfold and let them own their achievements and struggles.
PLAY WELL: Gen Muir wants to teach you how to be a better sideline parent
Q: How do you balance structured rep programs with a child's wellbeing and love of the game?
Focus on whether the arrangement works for the child, respect if it's their dream or yours, and consider balancing one sport with other activities to protect growing bodies and motivation.
PLAY WELL: Gen Muir wants to teach you how to be a better sideline parent
Q: Gen, thinking back to the early years of your kids, what did you notice about children or how your children were involved in sports and the expectations around involvement?
Gen observed that kids entered sports younger and that sideline intensity grew; she realized yelling wasn't helping and began exploring unstructured play and a child-centered approach to sport.
PLAY WELL: Kieren Perkins on why sport is more than just gold medals
Q: What sports did you play growing up besides swimming?
Perkins explains that he explored cricket, tennis, athletics, and other activities through the year, using a multi-sport approach before specialising, which shaped his overall athletic development and resilience.
PLAY WELL: How Rana Hussain is rewriting the rules of Australian sports culture
Q: What changes do you hope to see in clubs and governing bodies to support belonging for diverse communities?
I hope clubs actively listen to communities, implement small, concrete inclusions like accessible attire and prayer spaces, and ensure spaces are welcoming so people can bring their full selves and contribute to a healthier, more diverse sporting culture.
