  • Changed my Life

This podcast literally changed my life. Back in 2020, I was a naive, ignorant college student that loved animals and was looking for a podcast that covered a species every episode. Luckily I found this one which was exactly what I was looking for, and I was hooked. I didn’t know that I was so blind to all the horrific struggles animals go through. I didn’t know anything about conservation. At the time, I was starting my degree in animation. I would get fired up when learning more and more about ... more

  • Disappointed Ep:215 and False

    Ep 215:crested Porcupine

was such a disappointment I came to the show thinking I found a show that may talk about different animals that I have and learn more, and learn new animals. However listening to this episode I realize that you’re better reading an editorial on things they didn’t research. Half the episode doesn’t talk about the topic of Crested Porcupine, instead talking about desert which I know is habitat but too much about stuff other than topic at hand. THEN she starts talking abou... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Wisdom of Trees: What Forests Can Teach Humanity
Q: What does the phrase tree thinking mean in practical terms for how we view the world?
Tree thinking reframes our understanding of life as a branching, interconnected system rather than a straight ladder; it encourages considering multiple directions, recognizing relatedness among species, and applying that relational view to areas beyond evolution, such as culture, behaviors, and environmental policy.
Meerkats: The Tiny Sentinels Guarding the Desert (Revisited)
Q: What is the primary social structure of meerkat groups?
Meerkat social systems revolve around a dominant breeding pair with cooperative care from non-breeding individuals, including babysitting and sentinel duties, which together help the group survive in harsh desert environments.
Meerkats: The Tiny Sentinels Guarding the Desert (Revisited)
Q: First, where do meerkats fit in evolutionarily?
Meerkats are in the mongoose family (Herpestidae) and are the only member of their genus (Cercata), indicating a long, distinct evolutionary path within the group.
Noise Pollution Impacts on Birds w/Natalie Madden
Q: So what would you say was the core finding of your meta-analysis?
The core finding is that noise pollution exerts a substantial negative influence on both behavior and fitness in birds, with reproduction showing a particularly strong but not always statistically significant signal, implying potential population-level consequences in the longer term.
Secrets of the Bees with Dr. Sammy Ramsey
Q: What is the one misconception about honeybees that you wish would disappear soon?
That honeybees live in football-shaped hives in trees; in reality they are not aggressive by nature and have evolved to protect a crucial food resource, with stinging being a last resort.
