Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Menopause Matters: Closing Gaps in Care and Awareness
Q: What is CHARM and how does it aim to improve care for menopausal women?
CHARM consolidates education, awareness, and research efforts; it partners with medical societies and focuses on training the next generation of clinicians while testing innovative care delivery models to meet increased demand for menopause care.
Menopause Matters: Closing Gaps in Care and Awareness
Q: So why is menopause often overlooked in healthcare, and what gaps are most pressing?
Gaps exist in medical education and training across physicians, physical therapists, and other clinicians, leading to underprepared care; there is also a need for more research on perimenopause and for practical, scalable care models to reach diverse populations.
Words Matter: Reducing Stigma in Substance Use Disorder Care
Q: What impact have you seen after more than a year of implementation?
The campaign has increased awareness of non-judgmental language, with staff reporting specific shifts in terminology in critical care, NICU, emergency departments, and beyond. Staff express that choosing the right words reduces stigma and supports patient engagement in care, with posters serving as daily prompts in care settings.
Words Matter: Reducing Stigma in Substance Use Disorder Care
Q: How did you roll out the People Matter, Words Matter posters and how are they used in non-behavioral-health settings?
We collaborated with the American Hospital Association to adapt a poster series that can be displayed across the care continuum, including clinics outside behavioral health like orthopedics and primary care. The posters are paired with monthly topics, available digitally for leaders to customize with their hospital name, and accompanied by reminders to use non-judgmental language.
Words Matter: Reducing Stigma in Substance Use Disorder Care
Q: Tell us about CommonSpirit's footprint and why this work matters across your system.
CommonSpirit is one of the largest health systems in the country, formed by CHI and Dignity Health, with a national footprint reaching about one in four Americans and over 160 hospitals. The initiative leverages that scale to embed compassionate care, high-quality services, and social justice into behavioral health, with a focus on reducing stigma and increasing access to evidence-based treatments like medication-assisted treatment.
