Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#61 Tubulointerstitial nephritis – the Cinderella of nephrology, with Beatriz Sanchez Alamo
Q: Do you believe, as I do, that we are ignoring TIN and if so, what should we be doing differently?
Indeed, I fully agree with the title of this talk, which is the Cinderella of all nephrology. TIN has been neglected during many years because it was considered as a mild form of kidney disease.
#63 Treatment of obesity in patients with CKD, with Allon N. Friedman
Q: Should patients be informed that pharmacological treatment for obesity will be a lifelong commitment?
Yes, it's vital to communicate that the effects of weight loss medications can wear off quickly and thus may require ongoing usage to maintain benefits.
#63 Treatment of obesity in patients with CKD, with Allon N. Friedman
Q: How would you treat a patient with stage 2 obesity and CKD?
Treatment would start with understanding the patient's willingness to lose weight and then consider options like lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy, and possibly surgical options.
#58 BK nephropathy, with Camille Kotton
Q: What are we supposed to do if we get a high BK DNA load?
If the DNAemia is greater than 10,000 copies per milliliter and patients are not at high immunologic risk, we recommend reducing immunosuppression and monitoring closely.
#58 BK nephropathy, with Camille Kotton
Q: Why should we be doing this (monthly screening for plasma BK poliomyovirus deanemia loads)?
Because we aren't able to really distill who is at highest risk for developing BK nephropathy, monthly screening ensures early diagnosis and management.
