Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gary Lee from Diverse Erie
Q: Now, tell us again, for those who might not know, give us the background of Diverse Erie. How did it come about? And what were some of the disparities or statistical data that came to us being identified as a needed program for Erie County?
Diverse Erie formed in response to data showing disparities in health, housing, and wealth, including a racism-as-public-health-crisis resolution. The goal is to address inequities through targeted investments and programs.
George Moon and the Moon Mammoths!
Q: How did you first react when you found the bone and realized its significance?
Moon recalls the moment as disbelief followed by cautious steps: bringing the bone to shore, showing a colleague, and later learning it could be a mammoth scapula, which shifted everything from a simple dive to a major scientific and cultural story.
Johnny Johnson - Burleigh Legacy Alliance
Q: What should attendees expect from the 10th Annual Harry T. Burleigh Spirituals Festival weekend?
Attendees can expect a series of free, community-oriented events across Mercyhurst University venues, including a documentary screening, a large choral concert featuring an HBCU choir, and multiple workshops for different age groups, all culminating in the festival concert.
Johnny Johnson - Burleigh Legacy Alliance
Q: Could you tell us how the Burleigh Legacy Alliance started and what its mission is?
The Alliance grew from Charles Kennedy Jr.'s Harry T. Burleigh Society and evolved to preserve and celebrate Burleigh's legacy by bringing the Heritage Burleigh Festival to Erie, partnering with institutions like Tennessee State University, and engaging the broader community through free, accessible events.
