  • Interesting.

So far not to many favorites of mine, “ My Aim is True”, but that’s ok. I’d be hard pressed to list 300 favorites of mine. Finding an album where even 8 tracks are good is rare.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#249: 1984 - Van Halen (1984)
Q: Why did you pick Van Halen's 1984 for this episode?
It represents a peak both commercially and artistically, capturing the band's explosive energy, their use of keyboards within hard rock, and the personal and artistic tensions that defined the era.
#229: Sunflower - The Beach Boys (1970)
Q: Why did Jude Warren choose Sunflower for this episode?
Jude explains that Sunflower represents a mature, overlooked key in the Beach Boys' discography, showcasing a hippie-era ethos, sophisticated vocal arrangements, and Dennis and Carl Wilson's stronger contributions, which together create a sense of artistic renewal amidst internal turmoil.
#73: Rags to Rufus - featuring Chaka Khan (1974)
Q: Why did you pick Rags to Rufus for this episode?
Because it offers a rich blend of styles, shows Chaka Khan's emergence within Rufus, and provides a lot to discuss track by track, production choices, and historical context.
#115: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan (1963)
Q: What makes Freewheelin' feel like a pivotal shift in Dylan's career?
Tim Riley explains that the album marks Dylan's transition from traditional folk into a voice that could interweave topical critique, personal narrative, and sophisticated lyricism, creating a blueprint for the future singer-songwriter era while still rooted in the folk tradition.
#111: Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (1977)
Q: What inspired you to write about Rumours and its ongoing resonance beyond the 1970s?
Alan Light explains that the book began from noticing younger listeners' strong, almost generational connection to Rumours, and from examining how it continually reappears in culture through memes, TV, and film, beyond the contemporaneous Rose-colored drama, focusing on the music's live, organic impact and the human storytelling in the songs.
