I’m of some advanced years, so I don’t know all of the bands - but that’s an education. I love the format, and ethos!

  • Amazing podcast for musicians

Giles is a fantastic interviewer. The conversations are flowing and he easily brings them back to the theme of the podcast. As a musician it’s so valuable to hear everyone’s perspectives and still be entertained and inspired. We often listen to the episodes on tour and discuss after. Keep it up!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Emma Doran - "I started stand-up during my maternity"
Q: How did social media influence your trajectory as a performer?
Social media initially felt uncomfortable, but over time it became a critical way to share work, connect with audiences, and learn what material lands. It also created a dependency on updating content, yet it ultimately helped broaden opportunities and normalize being a working comedian.
Emma Doran - "I started stand-up during my maternity"
Q: What was the impetus or long-term plan when you first started doing stand-up during maternity leave?
There was no grand long-term plan; it was a simple urge to create and to see if I could do it. I started with small gigs, learned to film on my phone, and gradually built confidence and a following, realizing the value of showing up and trying things publicly.
Stewart Lee - "I left comedy for five years and started again"
Q: How did you decide to return to performance and what guided that transition?
I shifted away from expensive, high-risk productions to tightly planned tours of about 100 seats, guided by a need to communicate big ideas without accruing insurmountable debt, and I re-centered on shows that could be funded and sustainable.
Stewart Lee - "I left comedy for five years and started again"
Q: What did you do during your five-year gap when you stepped away from touring?
I wrote record reviews for the Sunday Times, worked on Jerry Springer, the Opera in various capacities, and gradually rebuilt my approach to making work that was both financially viable and substantively meaningful.
Stop & Chat: Hand Habits' Meg Duffy
Q: What was your frame of mind about writing Hand Habits while wrapping up other projects?
I aimed to write and develop Hand Habits while keeping doors open to other projects; it was about long-term persistence and not rushing the process.
