本书着重讲述百年前清朝时期中国人各方面的特质，或可说国民性，从面子问题、时间观念、公益心、同情心等多个角度对中国人进行解读。书中谈到不少中国人的优点，但更多的是他们国民性中的缺陷。该书在欧美国家发行之后，曾一度成为西方世界认识中国的主要渠道，并成为旅居中国的外国人阅读最多的著作之一。在美国，它是影响力最大的有关中国的著作。二战之前，这本书也是日本研究中国的重要资料。
作者简介：
明恩溥（1845—1932) ，原名阿瑟·亨德森·史密斯(Arthur Henderson Smith)，又作明恩普，美国人，基督教公理会来华传教士。1872年来华，最初在天津，1877年到鲁西北赈灾传教，在恩县庞庄建立其第一个教会，先后在此建立起小学、中学和医院，同时兼任上海《字林西报》通讯员。1905年辞去宣教之职。在明恩溥等人推动之下，1908年，美国正式宣布退还“庚子赔款”的半数，计1160... more
