幼い頃、家の裏山に不思議な道があった。
街のすぐそばの、誰も来ない森の中に、丁寧に組まれた石畳が続いていた。その入口には木の扉があったが、扉の両側には柵も塀もなく、横から自由に出入りできた。扉に意味はなかった。それでも扉はそこにあった。

田辺誠一は、四十年間翻訳家として生きてきた。
英語とフランス語。主に文学作品を手がけてきたが、仕事らしい仕事は三十代の頃が最も多かった。締切に追われ、辞書を引き、ゲラを直し、また辞書を引いた。編集者とは何度も電話で言い争い、翌朝には同じ編集者に礼を言った。

信号
感情がわからない、と気づいたのは、いつのことだったか。

一緒に暮らし始めて、もうすぐ一年になる。けれど、二匹はまだ仲良しというほどではなかった。
鴨川の河川敷に出ると、二匹は並んで歩き始めた。リードが絡まった。解こうとすると、また絡まった。どちらも嫌がらなかった。

色紙

右腕が痺れている。
動かせない。正確には、動かすと起こしてしまう。
見上げると、天井の染みがいつもと同じ場所にある。
最初は妻だった。
新婚の頃、妻は当たり前のように腕の中に収まった。腕が痺れても、そのことを言えなかった。言えるようになった頃には、妻はもう腕枕では眠らなくなっていた。
