  • Thanks for glazing TikTok

Loved how you didn’t ask Ole any hard questions about why they don’t pay for music consumption and just sat there and nodded like a dummy when he told you about their new exciting plans to pay publishers in exposure, let musicians hawk their own CDs like they’re on QVC, and giving brands music to use in ads without paying for them (did Apply pay Feist for that commercial sync Ole?) Whenever I want to hear two guys discuss the music business news from two weeks ago this is where I turn to first.

  • Great if Extremely Limited and Out of Touch

If you want to stay up to date on what’s happening in the music industry strictly from the major label perspective, this is absolutely the best you will find. I’m subscribed to most music business podcasts and the first hand knowledge these guys have is unparalleled. So why not give them a better rating? Because the major label perspective is increasingly becoming less relevant in the broad scope of the industry as a whole. While far from from being irrelevant, the majors seem more interested in... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Your Morning Coffee Special Episode: A conversation with Jaime Marconette
Q: What bold predictions or trends should the industry watch as we head into year-end?
Watch for continued diversification in languages and markets, growth in catalog emphasis, and the ongoing evolution of AI's role with greater industry understanding and potential regulatory or licensing shifts in how AI-used material is disclosed.
A Your Morning Coffee Special Episode: A conversation with Jaime Marconette
Q: Let's talk AI in more detail and how Luminate classifies AI-generated versus AI-assisted music; could this taxonomy become an industry standard?
Luminate emphasizes that AI is a tool, not a replacement, and stresses transparency; AI-assisted tracks are tracked separately from wholly AI-generated songs, with examples like AI remix tracks and the Beatles' AI-assisted project cited as references for clear labeling.
A Your Morning Coffee Special Episode: A conversation with Jaime Marconette
Q: How is the health of the music business so far this year, in your view?
Overall, the health is solid with a slight acceleration in growth; on-demand audio growth is around 4.8% mid-year, with more streams and higher percentage change in the first half of the year.
A Your Morning Coffee Special Episode: A Conversation with Deezer's Manuel Moussallam
Q: How does artist feedback influence the labeling process?
Artists can challenge tags; Deezer reviews the creative process, inspects artifacts, and may remove tags if the AI artifacts stem from processing artists weren't aware of, maintaining an open dialogue.
A Your Morning Coffee Special Episode: A Conversation with Deezer's Manuel Moussallam
Q: Can you explain how Deezer measures the accuracy of AI detection and why false positives matter more than high precision?
Deezer focuses on false positives because labeling non-AI tracks as AI would mislead users and undermine trust; they measure precision but emphasize minimizing false positives to ensure reliability in labeling and recommendations.
