  • The world needs this podcast

Why aren’t we dealing better with the climate emergency? The problem is our brains - they did not evolve for this kind of threat. Solar panels and recycling are good, but the real key to meaningful change is understanding how our brains work. Step forward Dave, this podcast, and his brilliant guests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Forecasting the Weather, with Helen Roberts
Q: How do weather forecasters actually predict the weather in practice?
Forecasts start with global observations, apply physics-based models at varying resolutions, and then translate the output into user-focused information, balancing detail with clarity for different audiences.
Discounting the Future
Q: Can we make people care more about the future by imagining it more vividly?
Yes, research suggests that concrete, vivid future visualization can increase willingness to wait for future rewards and invest in longer-term outcomes like retirement savings and potentially climate-friendly choices.
Discounting the Future
Q: What is discounting the future and why does it matter for climate action?
Discounting is the tendency to value present rewards more highly, which makes people less willing to incur costs now for long-term climate benefits; understanding this helps design interventions that make future outcomes feel more tangible.
Fear of Numbers, with Rob Eastaway
Q: Why is it important to have a sense of ballpark arithmetic?
To get a quick, useful sense of scale in everyday life and in decision-making, without needing exact figures; it helps in assessing whether numbers are being used responsibly in arguments.
Fear of Numbers, with Rob Eastaway
Q: What is Maths?
Rob explains that maths is about patterns, connections, and quantifying those patterns, and that while arithmetic is one end, true maths is about thinking and proving concepts beyond calculation.
