Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

James Pleasance – executive director of the World Match Racing Tour
Q: What role do venues and local organizers play in ensuring consistent competition quality and sustainability?
Events are largely run by local yacht clubs with volunteers, while the World Match Racing Tour acts as a marketing umbrella, sourcing top umpires and PROs as needed, promoting training for junior officials, and emphasizing sustainability by minimizing boat shipping and promoting local resources wherever possible.
James Pleasance – executive director of the World Match Racing Tour
Q: What are the challenges and opportunities for live TV and streaming coverage of the tour?
Live television is challenging for smaller events due to cost and sponsorship constraints, especially with a crowded calendar; however, the tour continues to improve content and leverage short, compelling race formats, while exploring streaming and social media to reach audiences, with occasional live TV for select events like the Congressional Cup.
James Pleasance – executive director of the World Match Racing Tour
Q: Why was the Women's World Match Racing Tour created, and how has it impacted the overall tour?
It was created in response to the popularity of women's match racing after the 2012 Olympics and the void left when the discipline was removed from the Games; rebranding under the World Match Racing Tour in 2022 established a formal, open pathway for women, increasing participation and visibility while maintaining the core match racing format.
James Pleasance – executive director of the World Match Racing Tour
Q: How did the World Match Racing Tour begin and evolve into the brand and global circuit it is today?
The tour started in 2000 as the Swedish Match Grand Prix Sailing Tour, bringing multiple events under a single umbrella to accumulate points toward a World Tour Champion; it later shortened its name to World Match Racing Tour in 2005 due to tobacco sponsorship regulations and a new agreement with World Sailing, continuing to add events and evolve with the sport.
ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP skipper Nicolai Sehested
Q: How does the relationship of the shore team to the tech team work?
It's really important, as you predicted, because it's a lot about trust but also working together because we have our own interest to make sure we have the best boat in the fleet.
