明治维新是日本式的“光荣革命”，之所以得以和平转型，乃是得益于幕府最后一位将军德川庆喜和他的海军大臣、日本最具有现代眼光的胜海舟，正是他们懂得政治的最高艺术乃是妥协，顺应了时代潮流。
明治维新具有双重性：既让日本托亚入欧，又为后来的军国主义提供了制度性源头：有权威而无权力的天皇制，内阁、议会和军部相互之间缺乏权力的制约，形成了日本独有的“无责任的体系”。
2025年12月5日晚，许纪霖教授与中国社科院近代史研究所的雷颐研究员，在北京先知书店有一场对谈，围绕着《刺猬与狐狸：中国知识分子十论》一书提出的问题，深入讨论何为知识分子？知识分子是否有责任担当，如何担当？如何做到有所为、有所不为？
