我在书架上一眼就看到了这本书，The Machine Age，中文译成《当机器人学会工作》。作者是我一直很喜欢的一位传记作家和政治经济学家，罗伯特·斯基德尔斯基。他那令人望而生畏的三卷本《凯恩斯传》一直摆在我的书架上，每次看到都有一种莫大的鼓舞，鼓励我继续把手上的书写完。

我们中间差了37岁。十多年前，我去香港城市大学参加城市文学节，那天李欧梵老师也在，当时我们一起给《亚洲周刊》写专栏，我三十岁出头，而他在整个华人世界学者里已经德高望重。我跟他说：“我想像你一样，做一个 free spirit。” 他对我说：“Yes, you are.”
这句特别简单的话，给了我非常多的鼓舞。青年时代，我读了很多李欧梵老师的书，他也是我写作梁启超的一个起点，无意中读到过他写梁启超作为一个世界公民去发现世界，或许也在我心中埋下一个周游世界、成为世界公民的影子。
