我度过了一个沉浸的下午。我坐在咖啡馆，阳光打在梧桐树上，听着阿里山邹族作曲家高一生的曲子，读费孝通的散文，好像内心有一种特别敏感的东西，一下被打开了。
很喜欢费先生的这本旧书，叫《逝者如斯》，是苏州大学出版社在1993年出版的，费先生从不说自己是个作家，他说自己是“杂写”。但读完这本书，我深深地感觉到，他是一位非常好的作家。如果不是经历历史的变动，他能沿着三、四十年代的方向一直写下去，他将不仅是个了不起的社会学家和人类学家，也会是一个非常了不起的作家。

谁能想到，这些大学时的即兴感叹，不仅变成一本书，且有如此意外的生命力。距离《那些忧伤的年轻人》的出版已经二十五年了，如果用戏剧性的措辞，你可以称之为四分之一世纪。
刚拿到在香港出的二十五周年纪念版，这本书的绝大部分篇章，写于1998年夏天到2000年春天，从北大东门外的平房到西门暖气不足的公寓楼里，我在一台自行组装的486电脑上，敲下这些杂乱无章的文字，反复听着老鹰乐队的歌，那首《Take It Easy》，我青年时代很喜欢，中年时代很喜欢，当我要迈入五十的时候，发现还是很喜欢。
