鹽，是人類生活中不可或缺的重要物資，而利用海水製鹽更是大自然賜予的珍貴資源。在台灣，許多地名都與鹽業有關，例如 鹽埕、鹽埔、鹽行、鹽寮 等，都記錄著過去製鹽產業的歷史。
📜從日本時代開始，鹽和菸、酒一樣屬於政府專賣的管制物資。當時鹽田還配置 鹽警 負責監督管理，以防止偷竊或私自販售。台灣沿海曾有大片鹽田分布，從 新竹油車港、苗栗通霄、彰化鹿港、嘉義布袋與東石，到台南北門、七股、將軍與高雄永安 等地，都曾是重要的曬鹽區。

早期在台灣海上航行的船隻，多是來自中國沿海的 唐山帆船，又稱 戎克（junk）。隨著蒸汽機時代來臨，輪船逐漸取代帆船，成為海上運輸的重要工具。而在沿岸與河川地區，人們則多使用靈活的小船——舢舨船。
🌊台灣西南沿海多為沙岸、淺灘與潟湖地形，最適合的船具就是 竹筏。早期的竹筏通常以 8 到 14 根麻竹製作，將竹子烘彎、翹起作為船艏，再以藤條編紮固定而成，長度約 兩丈。竹筏可用於近岸捕魚，也能運送魚獲與物資，甚至加上風帆行駛，或作為大船與岸邊之間的接駁工具。
