原來教會准許夫妻分居，因為她承認現世的人生中會諸多限制，有時並非我們所願，但確實發生了，遇到許多困難而無從稽考。
在具體的情況下，當然「因嚴重理由，婚姻的共同生活，實際上成為不可能時」，例如家庭暴力，對一方性命造成威脅，甚或若有子女，會使他們惶惶不可終日，嚴重影響子女成長。
因此，「教會准許夫妻分居；雖然教會更希望他們能和好如初。」分居並不等於離婚，夫妻關係依然存在，仍有重歸於好的可能性。

「嚴重違反婚姻聖事的罪過，包括：姦淫」，即通奸，有第三者介入婚姻關係，或婚外情、嫖妓，無論男女皆是。明顯這些罪都是在房事，在性行為中尋求快感，但完全漠視並不尊重自己與對方，在天主面前嚴肅許下的婚姻盟誓。
婚姻盟約是雙方完全交付與接納彼此，只有自己與對方二人。而姦淫則存在第三者，嚴重破壞婚姻關係與家庭的完整。

婚姻聖事舉行之後，雙方表達合意，即兩人意向完全相合，彼此願意將自己完全交付給對方，並全然接納對方。這樣就「產生永久和排他性的結合」，因為這是他們的意向，在天主面前締結的盟約。「永久」是指一生一世；「排他」則是指只有對方，完全交予自己給對方、接納對方。
有人會問：你們宗教不是強調彼此相愛嗎？為何婚後卻只愛一人、被一人所愛？這不是自私嗎？

在香港，雙方皆是天主教徒的婚姻大約只有10%到15%，換句話說，大部分婚姻中有一方不是天主教徒。
這裡不外乎有兩種情況：
一、「混合婚姻」：「即天主教徒與受過洗的非天主教徒結婚」，例如其他基督教派或東正教。「須獲得教會當局的明文許可，才屬合法。」即合乎教會規矩。
