在舊約中，安息日具有雙重意義。
第一層意義：停工休息與合作

「發虛誓是一個人宣誓作出一個無意履行的承諾」，即隨口亂說，根本沒打算去做，例如：「我保證一個月內會把這件事辦好給你」，但明知自己無法履行。
另外有「違背在宣誓下作出的承諾」。例如在法庭作證時，須發誓曾否目擊過某事發生，宣稱「沒有見過」，但事實上有見過，這便是假的「發虛誓」。

「第二誡」亦禁止人發虛誓。首先什麼是 「發誓」或「宣誓」？這並非指在民法上，例如在政府官員面前的宣誓（例如更改姓名），而是指一個信仰的民族，在《十誡》的背景下是指以色列民族，他們發誓藉由請求天主為自己的所言所行作證，這是呼號天主的信實，作為個人信實的保證，視之為「發誓」。

正面來說，我們應該「呼號」祂的聖名，因為我們需要投奔祂、信靠祂；我們也要「讚美」祂，並非出於某種原因，而是因為祂本身就是天主，神聖可敬的那一位，所以我們讚美與「光榮天主的聖名」。以上都是正面的，應該作的。事實上，天主的名字就是祂自己，「名如其人」，天主的聖名就是天主自己，正面如此地尊敬。
