先知，相信大家都知道，不是指未卜先知、算命的意思，而是指「天主的代言人」。因此，他們必須跟天主保持非常親密的關係，否則怎麼能夠為天主代言呢？所以他們在祈禱中與天主交談，「汲取光照和力量」與勇氣；正因為跟天主親近，他們才有足夠的勇氣和力量去面對一切挑戰。

在舊約中，「天主子民（以色列民）的祈禱，是在天主居所」中作的。「天主居所」，當然他們從埃及上來後，曾經停留在會幕裏，會幕也曾經停在史羅、貝特爾等地。後來達味定都於耶路撒冷，他的兒子撒羅滿更於耶路撒冷建造了聖殿。於是，天主子民的祈禱就聚在聖殿裏——當然不是指最深處的至聖所（因為那裏放著約櫃，平常人不能進去，大司祭一年也只能進去一次），而是向著聖殿所在之處祈禱。

「梅瑟的祈禱是默觀祈禱的典型」。所謂的「默」，代表著那份奧秘與深沈；「觀」則是那種親自經驗，在奧秘中、在潤物無聲的狀態下，深深經驗到天主的臨在。這是一種非常親近的默觀，雖然肉眼看不見天主的形體，卻能感受到天主真實的同在。
