從字面來講，「十誡意即『十句話』(出34:28)」，在《出谷紀》和《申命紀》中都有記載。話說梅瑟登上西乃山四十日四十夜，回來後拿了兩塊約板，約板上面寫了《十誡》，說是「天主用手指所寫的」（出31:18）。這意思是什麼呢？天主並沒有肢體，是用死光嗎？

這要追溯到福音中的記載，有人（有些福音記載是經師）問耶穌，他對舊約法律非常熟悉。他問耶穌：「師傅，法律中那條誡命是最大的？」」(瑪22:36）「耶穌在愛的誡命光照下解釋法律，這是一條二而一的誡命」，即是一體兩面。怎為之一體兩面呢？一方面就是愛天主，第二方面就是愛人。這出自《瑪竇福音》第22章37至40節。

「因為基督信徒以符合主耶穌的生活，吸引人信仰真實的天主」──那位肉眼看不見、卻是真實生活的天主。
這能「建樹教會」，因為天主就是愛，而主耶穌則是圓滿地將這份愛呈現出來，尤其是在祂死而復活的奧跡當中。祂愛我們到底，當我們承受了這份愛，生命自然應該有所轉變。
