罪惡會影響我們的認知能力與深度。例如壞習慣如經常說謊，起初或許會感到內疚或受良心譴責，但隨著次數增加，內疚感會逐漸減低並開始麻木。人甚至會用各種理由將行為合理化，如辯稱「大家都這樣做」或「為了更大的目標」。

首先回到昨天提到的「道德律」，這個概念有多種層次且彼此間互相配合。首要是「永恆律」，即天主是一切法律的泉源，唯有祂知道善惡，是最終的標準與基礎。
但呈現在人身上，當天主創造人時，將這「自然道德律」「寫在每一個人心靈上的，在於讓人分享天主的智慧和美善」。從人的心靈中已「表達原始的道德意義」，即有所規範，「允許人以理性分辨，何者為善，何者為惡。」由於通過理性──這是每個人與生俱來的本性──因此稱之為「自然道德律」。
