首先，我們要重新溫習什麼是「聖傳」。聖傳不只是代代相傳的歷史軌跡那麼簡單，而是天主聖神在其中親自帶領信友團體——也就是基督徒團體——走過時代的變遷。在代代相傳的過程中，「聖神藉著活生生的聖傳」將天主的奧秘與信徒緊密扣連起來，「教導（世世代代）天主的子女如何祈禱」。因此，聖傳對於祈禱來說是絕對不可或缺的。

「讚頌是最直接承認天主就是天主的祈禱方式。」我們可以先將它與之前的祈禱形式做個對比：它不是求恩，因為求恩是向天主祈求賜予我們各種好處（無論是物質或神形方面）；它也不是謝恩，因為謝恩是在得到了天主的恩典之後向祂道謝。
