这本书揭示的东西不难理解：贫困往往源于是结构性的压迫，并非贫困者个人造成，也并非贫困者个人能够解决。大规模的贫困人口往往意味着社会结构的畸形和政治决策的不作为。
作者芭芭拉有勇气，足够真诚，同时文笔犀利。当然，底层的生活并不有趣，劳动者也并不总是和善的与理性的。只是她确实撕开了社会那一隅人们不愿意去观察甚至刻意忽视的角落，并且愿意真诚地反思和审视自己所真正处在的“富人”阶级。
