  • How to navigate critical race issues

This episode was so helpful. I needed the perspective …needed

It several months ago to be frank. It would have defused a pretty intense conversation. I’m learning a lot from your podcast. Keep it up Tim! God bless you for your gracious, insightful insights about how to navigate culture wars in today’s melee.

So thankful for the great work that is being done through this podcast. Each episode is relevant, thoughtful and I always find a new perspective on a topic I have been needing a different voice to speak in to. I hope this podcast is here to stay. We need more inspiring conversations like these to lead us into a better way to talk and think and act in an increasingly complex world. Thank you for setting the standard incredibly high.

  • Timely

There are disagreements in our Christian family and extended family about politics and beliefs so I value the hard work that you guys have put into this and the service that you are providing to so many. My plan is to go through all of the podcasts and look at your other sources as well. Thanks again. Arlene. (On CRU) 😊

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Intellectual Humility and Deep Convictions
Q: Would you make a distinction between tolerance and intellectual humility? And if so, how might you nuance the difference between those two things?
Tolerance is a broader, perhaps modern idea tied to not harming others, while intellectual humility is a virtue tied to actively engaging, listening, and being open to being wrong, with conviction that remains held in a thoughtful way.
Collegiality and Friendship Amidst Religious Disagreement
Q: How did inhabiting a different community's perspective (e.g., LDS) affect understanding and dialogue?
Inhabiting the LDS perspective helped expose the limits of one-sided discussions, encouraged reliance on shared sources, and highlighted the value of truly engaging the other tradition's scriptures to communicate more faithfully and charitably.
College Students Who Practice Interfaith Dialogue
Q: What honest disagreements have arisen as you've interacted with BYU students?
Max discusses theological differences such as the LDS view of the Trinity versus evangelical views, while Alexis highlights LDS beliefs about original sin and revelation, illustrating how the groups can acknowledge differences without dismissing each other.
College Students Who Practice Interfaith Dialogue
Q: What surprised you most about the evangelical perspective during these sessions?
Lauren describes her initial assumptions about evangelicalism, then notes increased understanding through dialogue, especially around how Biola's center on Jesus contrasts with her prior experiences, which deepened her appreciation for the community.
College Students Who Practice Interfaith Dialogue
Q: Lauren, can you introduce yourself and share why you joined this experience?
Lauren explains she's a Biola communications major who participated because the project sounded similar to Pomona dialogues but offered a new context with BYU, and she wanted to explore how the experience could transform her approach to conversations with people holding different worldviews.
