  • Informational and relatable

I live in central Florida and there is not much turkey content or any content on wildlife in Florida. It’s refreshing to hear from someone who is local, knowledgeable, and passionate about the wildlife. I enjoy all the research that is discussed and love learning from it. You guys are doing a fantastic job educating people to help conserve the wild turkey. Keep it rolling!

  • Love the science!

I am a scientist, dedicated to research and discovery, then followed by implementation. I am also an avid hunter, who, after decades of hunting, is still trying to learn about turkeys. Your podcasts are extraordinarily informative and helpful in both respects. I wish that more hunting and fishing platforms would include useful, basic scientific information about animal behavior, physiology, and demographics. There is something there for everybody and we’re all better off by learning more about w... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Burning During Nesting: What the research says | #187
Q: How does prescribed fire influence nesting habitat for turkeys and other ground-nesting birds?
The data show that prescribed fire maintains and creates the herbaceous understory and ecotone habitats that turkeys and other ground-nesters rely on, and nest survival can be high when nests are in ecotones or lowland areas; risks during nesting exist but are far outweighed by long-term habitat benefits.
The Evolution of Turkey Calling: From bone to box | #177
Q: What was the most exciting finding in your historical research on turkey calls?
Brent Rogers explains that the most exciting aspect was uniting a decade-long vision with tangible evidence, including primary sources and family histories, which allowed him to trace the evolution of calls from Native American beginnings to modern artifacts, while also highlighting diverse communities and makers who contributed to the culture.
Next steps in NWTF support of turkey research | #178
Q: From your perspective two months into the role, what are the high-level objectives NWTF wants to accomplish in the coming years?
The key objectives center on formalizing and advancing research priorities through the Turkey Technical Committee, expanding endowed professorships nationwide, improving metrics for abundance and recruitment, and ensuring research outputs are translated back to the public and to practitioners, all while maintaining collaboration across agencies and universities.
Turkeys and Grouse | #162
Q: What are the habitat requirements for rough grouse?
Ben details the importance of forest age diversity and the need for early successional habitats to support grouse populations.
Turkeys and Grouse | #162
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your background and why you transitioned to the dark side?
Ben discusses his interest in habitat management and how his experiences led him to focus on grouse and woodcock conservation while maintaining his passion for turkeys.
