Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Paige Maylott
Q: How easy is it to move on from this book and from this story?
Oh, absolutely still in my head. And we did have to remove several chapters, but also I self-edited quite a lot out of it as well.
Paige Maylott
Q: When you completed that raw version, when you felt yourself freed from all those academic constraints, did you or were you tempted to just go back to your professor and say like, can I now submit this?
I was tempted, definitely. But again, you know, it was one of the prerequisites of the program to integrate those academic references.
Paige Maylott
Q: Was the fact that this book is a memoir, was that inevitable?
I approached it from a different angle actually. At the very beginning of my book, I credit Dr. Sarah Brophy as someone who stuck with me and that's because this book actually started out as a master's thesis.
Kyo Maclear
Q: What’s your perspective on writing memoirs while still grieving?
Kyo reflects that while the general advice is to wait for distance when writing about grief, she needed to write immediately for processing and understanding events as they happened.
Kyo Maclear
Q: How did your relationship with your mother influence your writing?
Kyo explains that after her mother passed away, she decided not to seek additional information about her family's secrets, feeling at peace with what she knew and accepted the mysteries.
