  • Excellent podcast

I listen to several podcasts a day that relate to Israel and the challenges we are facing today in the Jewish world, and I have to say that this is among my favourites. I think Manya Marcus is an exceptional host and interviewer, and I have the greatest respect for what she’s trying to accomplish.

  • Addressing the present Sephardic narrative

This conversation means so much to me . My late husband sensed a special bond to Judaism and Jews. We, as Seventh Day Adventists hold the Shabbot as sacred and very dear. As a teacher he was able to attend one the yearly events at the Holocaust museum in Israel. We attended a conservative Synagogue often and attended classes. We explained we felt very indebted to Jews for the knowledge they preserved that is our roots as believers in Hashem . I urged him to get a DNA test and it came back southe... more

  • Excellent

I’m an Israeli that has listened to your podcast from the beginning. I especially like it because it’s not about taking sides, but making available the human side of these turbulent years. It has not only informed me of the atmosphere that the Jewish community is living in the diaspora, but has told the remarkable stories of Israeli’s surrounding me. Thank you for your compassionate interviews and your wonderful music at the end of every episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

”I Couldn’t Lose Myself”
Q: How did you manage fear when Daniel was away in reserves and the war expanded globally?
Fear was tempered by action and purpose; staying engaged with community work, leadership roles, and mutual support helped me stay balanced and focused on helping others rather than dwelling on the fear.
”I Couldn’t Lose Myself”
Q: Did you feel surprised by how quickly things soured for people in the diaspora after October 7?
I was shocked but not surprised; antisemitism had been bubbling beneath the surface, and large protests in places like London revealed the scale of that sentiment, which underscored how interconnected the diaspora is with events in Israel.
“Young People Are The Heroes Of This War"
Q: What is your relationship to fear, given you're in a war zone and pursuing combat medicine?
She explains that fear exists but does not deter her; it motivates action and reinforces a commitment to her identity and duties, including decisions like skydiving as a personal challenge and choosing to stay and help rather than flee.
“Young People Are The Heroes Of This War"
Q: So tell me what you're doing in your life right now.
Shelly describes her life as a fourth-year medical student in Israel who plans to serve as a military doctor for several years, balancing studies with the realities of being in a war zone and serving in combat-related medical training.
"You Know Why, And You Continue"
Q: How do you balance documenting brutal events with protecting your own family and well-being?
Disassociation and compartmentalization are described as necessary tools in the moment, but the guest emphasizes ongoing personal processing, support from family, and finding meaningful ways to translate trauma into education and memory.
