  • Very soothing listen

I love this podcast and there’s one thing that bothers me that I feel compelled to say. I feel like Ben polices Ione’s “tangents” which honestly don’t even feel like tangents to me, they just feel like a natural way of telling a story. And he even does that to himself a little bit. This is actually a testament to how much I like the podcast that I want to hear more and every time he moves it along faster I wish he wouldn’t. Anyway love you both!

  • The perfect antidote

Have just discovered this podcast and thoroughly enjoying the sweet and funny banter between these two, their observations of pop culture, and their insider stories from the music/ film/ arts scene. Looking forward to reading Ione’s memoir and seeing Ben on tour again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Listener Question: Favorite Movie Soundtrack?
Q: Firstly, do you think the film's soundtrack as a medium will ever have a resurgence outside of digital streaming playlists or is it lost forever?
We think the resurgence of soundtrack culture depends on how media ecosystems evolve; while physical albums declined, new formats, curated experiences, and especially platform-driven discoveries (like TikTok and other social media) can reintroduce and redefine soundtracks for new audiences. The conversation also notes that visual media will continue to contextualize songs, keeping soundtrack relevance alive even if consumption patterns shift.
Listener Question: Desert Island Stuff?
Q: If you had to pick five Desert Island Discs, what would they be, plus a book and a luxury item?
Ben and Ione share a mix of classic and adventurous picks, ranging from Astral Weeks and Blood on the Tracks to De La Soul and The Balloon, with a philosophical or guiding book like The Dowdy Ching or The Places You'll Go, and a luxurious item such as high-thread-count sheets or a cozy setup that makes island life more comfortable.
Listener Question: Finding Courage to Try New Things
Q: From Fazia... How do you give permission to do something you love without comparing yourself to people who've been doing it forever?
The hosts acknowledge imposter syndrome as common, encourage embracing a beginner's mindset, and suggest that progress comes from showing up, practicing, and not letting perfectionism block exploration. They emphasize that you can pursue art as a personal journey, balance private and public endeavors, and treat painting or music as ongoing practice rather than a fixed career litmus test.
Listener Question: Dream Cover Versions?
Q: If you were ever to release a covers album, what three songs would you include and why?
Ben lists influences and mentions an approach to choosing tracks, including a mix of classic show tunes and indie rock staples, and Ione shares a couple of preferences, with the hosts reflecting on how these choices would fit a cohesive covers project.
Listener Question: Do You Get Paid On Old Work?
Q: Hi Ben, hi Ione. I just downloaded a copy of Say Anything from Apple as my DVD player doesn't work, and it was cheaper than getting a new one. How does this affect royalties or payments for you as creators?
The royalties on older works can come in many forms and aren't always straightforward; residuals can be small or sporadic unless there's a back-end deal, and catalogs can keep paying out long after initial release, especially with streaming and re-discovery cycles. Musicians often rely on performing rights organizations and admin deals to collect royalties from radio play and streams around the world, while actors may see uneven residuals depending on the project and the deals in place.
