We used to be journalists, but now we mostly just bitch about them. (Kidding. Kind of.) We also break down broken news.
Episodes drop Wednesday and Saturday.
Hosted by long-suffering journalists and even longer-suffering friends Jan Fran and Antoinette Lattouf, We Used to Be Journos pulls apart the week in media from people who know exactly how the machine runs because they worked inside it for de... more

EDIT: me again, thanks for responding queens! I will say, when you say passing through the hands of “many many editors” it goes to my point of maybe having not been in regular old newsrooms for a while. Try one editor. Also, there’s a difference between being presenters and being on the actual tools, doing the grunt work in a 24/7 newsroom. For you both, that’s been awhile.

I love the pod and recently had the pleasure of listening to the both of you on my other favourite pods - Ladies and the Imperfects - so affirming to hear you both on those pods. Thank you for what you do, thank you for making me feel less crazy.
Please don’t change, swearing and laughing perfection.
Today I listened to the ‘women who win’ episode, and I felt so proud of Antoinette and also of Jan for their work and this podcast. Instead of falling into despair over the state of Australia’s media and Antoinette being fired by the ABC for posting about genocide - they made this podcast to help provide a unique, refreshing and much needed analysis on the news. Thank you to both- as a young Australian woman I love hearing your insights and listening to your friendship and support of each other
Overall, it’s a great podcast. I wish, though, that they would (1) do a land acknowledgment—the bare minimum, (2) actually instruct or offer helpful tidbits on media literacy, instead of always laying it out entirely, and (3) that they wouldn’t frequently take such liberalistic positions. It feels especially fortunate that we’re in this colony and not the USA, because I cannot imagine their reporting would be as tough as they flimsily demand of their USA counterparts. They offer suggestions on w... more

A sharp, analysis-driven show that dissects the mechanics of newsrooms and how editorial decisions shape public discourse. Across episodes, the hosts consistently skim headlines, expose marketing and editorial tricks, and call out bias, misinformation, and power dynamics in media and politics. The tone blends insider perspective with accessible humor, offering practical takeaways for audiences who want to understand how coverage is crafted and where independent analysis fits in a crowded information landscape. Notable strengths include long-form insider context, fearless questioning of institutions, and a willingness to challenge conventional wisdom without losing wit or humanity.
