  • Long, Passionate Conversations

Jen and her guests always wax poetic about old stars and genre movies. They are sweet nectar for film geeks who want to know they are not alone in loving film. My favorite episode was the Robert Mitchum remembrance and the Coen Bros. episode on creativity.

  • Great discussions

I love the breadth of film topics Jen discusses - I always end up with an exciting new watchlist. She is such a great interviewer as well and deeply knowledgeable about film. I’ve listened to other podcasts where the host interrupts guests repeatedly and can’t listen because it’s too annoying. Not trying to be negative, just want to highlight how great Jen is at letting her guests share their insights. She gets so many great writers and filmmakers too - love it!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Watch With Jen - S7: E13 - Steven Spielberg with Barbara VanDenburgh
Q: How did Spielberg influence the way you watch movies and understand film criticism, particularly for younger generations?
She argues Spielberg helped define a model where blockbuster spectacle and serious artistic ambition coexist, a template that encourages viewers to engage with film on multiple levels—emotionally, aesthetically, and thematically. This has shaped her own approach to criticism: looking for craft, context, and cultural impact as much as entertainment value, and recognizing how a director can mentor audiences into deeper cinematic appreciation.
Watch With Jen - S7: E13 - Steven Spielberg with Barbara VanDenburgh
Q: What are Barbara's favorite Steven Spielberg films and why does she gravitate toward AI despite its controversial reception?
Barbara cites Close Encounters of the Third Kind as an intensely personal and transformative work, while AI resonates for its dark, emotionally challenging themes and its ambitious, audacious ideas that challenged conventional cinema at the time. She explains that even films she doesn't love fully still contain moments of remarkable craft, emotional truth, and technical ingenuity that keep them in conversation with viewers and critics.
Watch With Jen - S7: E7 - Juzo Itami & Nobuko Miyamoto with Jordan Harper
Q: So Jordan, thank you so much for being here. How are you doing?
I'm doing well and excited to discuss these films and how their focus on decency, craft, and community still resonates today, especially through Miyamoto's performances and Itami's unique storytelling.
Watch With Jen - S7: E6 - "When You Wish Upon a Star." Disney Magic with Laurel Hightower
Q: What stood out to you about the princess archetypes in these films?
The discussion highlighted how these films challenge traditional princess narratives by showing growth, independence, and the idea that happiness can come from choice and partnership rather than marriage alone.
MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH - Episode 3 with Ben Mankiewicz & Alan Sepinwall MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH - Episode 3 with Ben Mankiewicz & Alan Sepinwall (From One Heat Minute Productions & Watch With Jen)
Q: What was the most memorable scene at the time?
There's one bit in particular that got by far the biggest laugh... It's perfect.
