  • Old format was 5/5

4/5 stars only because I really enjoyed the older format. The convos were longer and more in depth and having both Brianna and Jared made it very well rounded…they had excellent energy together! Honestly, I also thought the old theme music was better and catchier.

  • Why move the podcast?

I love the podcast and have picked up books that I normally wouldn’t after listening. I also think Jerrod and Breanna do a fantastic job as hosts. However, I'm thoroughly annoyed that full episodes of the podcast have moved over to the BOTM app. I subscribe to a lot of podcasts and I think it’s ridiculous to expect me to go to another app to listen to a single podcast. I usually listen to podcasts while driving and the podcast app syncs with my car making it easy for me to navigate, obviously th... more

  • Move to app is obnoxious

I’ve been enjoying this podcast since it started but probably won’t listen anymore now that it has moved to the BOTM app. I’m a member and have access but a separate app for a single podcast is super inconvenient and I’m baffled why this was done. No one is going to get a book subscription just to listen to a podcast, so this seems like a much better way to piss off existing members than to get new ones.

  • Pushing their app

Why is botm pushing their app so much? Some of us don’t want another app and it’s such a bummer they are removing all the club features unless you download the app :( why would they only make a preview of a podcast available? Not worth it to follow.

Love the content, wish they would just stop pushing the app and make it available on their website and Apple podcasts

  • Good Content - Need More Professional Hosts

I love hearing the authors perspectives, the content is great, but the hosts could be more articulate. The laughter, at things that aren’t funny, is very distracting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sarah Damoff thinks marriage needs better vocabulary.
Q: Can you share a bit about the role of memory and time in the story, especially with the Alzheimer's subplot?
Memory acts as a tether to the past and a lens for current choices; Alzheimer's is used as a narrative device to explore how time shifts perception and how families navigate those shifts with empathy and honesty.
Sarah Damoff thinks marriage needs better vocabulary.
Q: What were you looking at exploring in the depiction of infidelity in this book?
The intent was not to glamorize infidelity but to examine loneliness, the impact on a family, and how individuals navigate complex emotions within long-term relationships, rather than treating it as a mere plot device.
Sarah Damoff thinks marriage needs better vocabulary.
Q: So what was the central focus of your exploration when you depict the aftermath of the wedding and the more complicated stages of a relationship?
The focus is less on infidelity as a romance plot and more on how a mother's isolation and broader family dynamics intersect with marriage, aging, and memory, showing how loneliness and distance can affect bonds.
Charlotte McConaghy wrote the Book of the Year.
Q: How does isolation influence your characters and the story?
She explains isolation on Macquarie Island shaped the narrative's tension and thematic focus on balance between solitude and community.
Charlotte McConaghy wrote the Book of the Year.
Q: What is a seed vault and why did it inspire your book?
The author discusses the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard as a library-like bank of seeds and how the concept sparked the novel's central ethical dilemma about what to save.
