  • The Village Zendo Dharma Talks

I’m a DIY practitioner living a distance from any Buddhist Center. I’ve recently discovered The Village Dharma talks and I’ve been totally taken by the wise diversity of voices. As a public school kindergarten teacher of many years, I was delighted to hear today’s talk on The Dharma of Kindergarten. To paraphrase Roshi; “ The world is vast and wide, a formless field of benefaction.”🙏🏽☺️

Talks by Mukei and Gihan Un-no, “The Legacy of Juneteenth and of Nagasaki”
Q: Would you agree that Esco's mother, as she was dying, somehow naturally came to the same understanding as Dogen, that it was necessary to, in her last days, turn the light inward, take a backward step, and that allowed her to apologize and to reconcile with her daughter?
Yes, it reflects the necessary time for silence and reflection for both Etsuko and her mother to find their way back to each other, showing how silence can lead to a path of healing and reconciliation.
Talks by Mukei and Gihan Un-no, “The Legacy of Juneteenth and of Nagasaki”
Q: Can you talk a little bit more about the Buddha's teaching and how Buddhist or Soto Zen ideas about compassion and suffering connect to this story of so much suffering?
The teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha emphasize that all beings, including plants, are connected, which is what Zazen helps us realize. By practicing, we can cultivate a heart that understands the oneness of all beings, leading to the disappearance of world conflicts.
Dharma talk by Ejo Patrick McMullen, “The Identity of Soto Zen”
Q: What would you say is the biggest challenge for you in negotiating these two worlds or these two streams?
It always changes, but I would say early on, I spent a lot of time culturally interpreting.
Dharma talk by Enkyo Roshi and Mitsue Nagase, “Japanese Aesthetics”
Q: Can you tell us about your process in creating this book?
Mitsue describes her experience of photographing Zen gardens, emphasizing the challenge of connecting with them initially, and how spending time in these spaces allowed her to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the beauty they represent.
