Financial Times reporter Antonia Cundy uncovers how a little-known group within the Catholic Church has come to wield outsized cultural and political influence in America. Opus Dei exists to help people get closer to God, but some members say they found other agendas – and unexpected harm – entangled in that spiritual mission. In this series, Antonia hears stories from insiders who describe how bo... more

  • Excellent Journalism

I read Gareth Gore’s revealing book “Opus” that sheds light on the secretive operations of Opus Dei from its founding. I applaud Pope Leo for talking to him and to this excellent follow up podcast that adds personal, first-hand accounts that reveal poor leadership and disingenuous intentions of this corrupt institution.

  • Troubling story of modern slavery

Though most people will connect with this story due to the influence it shows Opus Dei has over the Supreme Court and organizations like the Heritage Foundation, the most gripping part for me was the story in the first episodes of how the woman Sarah was manipulated into cooking and cleaning for Opus Dei houses for years for essentially no pay. Literally slavery in the USA in the 20th century. And it’s happened with Opus Dei in Argentina, Mexico, and Ireland too. When you’ve been manipulate... more

  • Excellent & considered reporting

It’s no easy feat to interrogate the theme of religion and specifically unpack the social impact of an influential, global organisation that has presided over multiple generations. Once again the FT demonstrates journalistic rigour in its editorial approach to illuminating the findings from this multi-year investigation. A challenging but rewarding listen.

  • Interesting, eye-opening, and relevant

Some of the highest level people in the groups deciding who will be recommended for nomination to SCOTUS /lower federal courts, as well as the highest level officials in the administration and in the Republican foundations most intertwined with it, are anywhere from Opus Dei curious to full-fledged members. 5 of the 6-person SCOTUS majority are fundamentalist Catholics and the 6th is a Catholic who switched to Protestantism. Therefore, this series could not be more essential. Opus Dei by Garrett... more

Toxic Legacy: Bonus episode with Samantha Power
Q: How did you get involved in lead poisoning as a global issue, and why did you see it as a solvable problem?
Power explains that a memo from a junior staffer convinced her of the scale and tractability of the problem; she describes using strategic funding and a playbook approach to mobilize governments, test blood lead levels, and pursue preventive regulation, emphasizing the mismatch between the disease burden and resource allocation.
Power for Sale, Ep. 3: Belgiangate
Q: Do you think that the European Parliament has a problem with corruption?
I really trust the Parliament, and I hope that we can show to the citizens that the Parliament was not harmed.
