  • Episode 363 - Why Does the Term “Mocktail” for Zero Proof Non-Alcholholic Drinks offend

I really appreciated listening to this episode with Elva Ramirez as Natalie’s guest. The podcasts are highly engaging, witty, expressive and clear, as is her writing. I especially enjoyed this episode to learn how much similar prep work and time goes into zero-proof drinks just like drinks containing alcohol. I also look forward to reading Elva’s book on mixing cocktails for any of my occasions! Sharon

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

381: From Hard Time to Happy Hour: The Remarkable Resurrection of McConnell's Irish Whisky
Q: What was the biggest obstacle to reviving this brand?
Covid was the major hurdle, shutting pubs and restaurants, but the team adapted with virtual briefs, and the broader project required aligning government ownership, a US-based board, and banking, taking years to reach consensus before reconstruction could begin.
379: More Than a Drink: Why Wine Divides & Unites Cultures with Sarah Heller MW
Q: How do you define fine wine in a way that avoids purely subjective debates?
Fine wine is wine with the potential to improve over time and maintain value through broad market consensus and fundamental quality, not just subjective opinion.
379: More Than a Drink: Why Wine Divides & Unites Cultures with Sarah Heller MW
Q: Why do you think wine is treated more as a cultural artifact in Italy than in Anglo-Saxon environments?
Because there is a deep historical embedding of wine in Italian culture as a symbol of art and culture, while other regions tend to separate wine as a beverage from its cultural meaning.
375: Why is Your Taste in Wine as Individual as Your Fingerprint? Jordan Salcito Shares the Story
Q: How does understanding structural components like tannin, acid, and alcohol improve one's wine experience?
They help you understand what to pair with the wine and how it influences the overall tasting experience.
375: Why is Your Taste in Wine as Individual as Your Fingerprint? Jordan Salcito Shares the Story
Q: What motivated you to start your book with tasting rather than history, regions, or grapes?
I wanted to get right into the sensory experience rather than some of the drier knowledge.
