  • Love this podcast

First it’s fun to say the name of this podcast. The biggest thing I’ve learned from Kara is the concept of being emotionally neutral and the need to work through your feelings until you are neutral BEFORE confronting or responding to someone when you’re upset. This has made a significant difference in my life! ❤️❤️

  • Taking back my brain

Kara has helped me take back my brain like no other self help work has. I now can see clearer how our sexist society has molded me to see my body as defective and my migraines as a further failure. My dependence on doctors and pills fks up my brain and gives my power away again. She is very inspiring.

  • Motivation and reason

Kara is always just what I need when my brain is working against me! I recently started a fractional leadership business and wrestle with self doubt. Kara has taught me how to recognize these are thoughts and how to work past them. Love how she balances science and experience. Kara brings big-sister energy to this big sister.

  • Finally: the Emotional Tool-Kit I’ve been Longing for

I’ve been binging this podcast for a couple of weeks and I am FLOORED by the efficacy of Kara’s actionable insights. For years I have been pounding away at my personal goals — following standard self-help advice to act in accordance with my values and hoping that the rest would fall into place. But despite my efforts I continued to feel TERRIBLE emotionally because even though I could bully myself into action, I still allow(ed) negative thoughts to live in my brain and wreak havoc on my nervous ... more

  • Brilliant

Listening to Kara has started to change me. Yesterday, for example, at my child’s lacrosse practice, I chatted with multiple parents. Something I would not have done before listening to Kara. I used the thought ladder starting with the thought “I don’t have a community” to the goal thought of “I have a community” and picked the thought from my thought ladder of “it is possible to build a community.” This somehow freed me to talk with other parents without worry. Maybe they can be part of my... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

493. Coaching Hotline: Making Friends as an Adult & The Line Between Honesty and People-Pleasing
Q: A friend is slowly distancing herself after you offered a suggestion she didn't ask for, and a family gathering involved tension when you shared your opinions. How should I handle this to avoid losing friends?
Kara recommends digging into the underlying reasons you share unsolicited opinions, clarifying what you want to think and feel in those moments, and recognizing that maintaining authenticity doesn't require sacrificing relationships. She differentiates between genuine boundary setting and people-pleasing, and encourages evaluating motives and expected outcomes before speaking up.
493. Coaching Hotline: Making Friends as an Adult & The Line Between Honesty and People-Pleasing
Q: Is it realistic to work on these things at the same time? Also, I grew up in an anti-social family, meaning friends were for school and only during school.
Kara encourages concurrent growth and social action, emphasizing that you don't have to wait until perfection to start building friendships. She reframes the belief that you have poor friendship skills by pointing to the existing evidence (one close friend) and suggests shifting that narrative to build confidence and gradually expand your network.
491. Coaching Hotline: Thought Work, Moral Objectivism & The Motivation to Set Goals
Q: Does thought work require rejecting moral objectivism to be effective?
No—thought work can be useful across different belief systems and doesn't require a purity test of truth; it can function within relativistic or non-relativistic frameworks and still provide value.
491. Coaching Hotline: Thought Work, Moral Objectivism & The Motivation to Set Goals
Q: Hi Kara, I have a question about thought work and goals. Is it any goal you set because you want to feel a certain way?
The core idea is that thought work can work for reasons beyond just feeling better; goals can be pursued for growth, curiosity, and the experience of learning, not solely for emotional payoff.
489. Coaching Hotline: Social Media Validation & Emotional Vulnerability vs. Thought Work
Q: How should one frame their art business to avoid the trap of equating likes with monetary success, and what practical steps help sustain consistent creation?
She recommends choosing a clear business model—whether client commissions or revenue from art itself (Patreon, book deals, etc.)—and using thought work to separate self-worth from online metrics, while focusing on concrete business goals and content strategy to support those goals.
