  • Life-Changing

I have been listening to this podcast since 2019. At that point in my life, I only had a high school diploma and was working a series of dead-end food service jobs. I had always been great and school growing up, but I had crippling anxiety, depression, and confidence issues that led me to dropping out of college and losing my spark.

Kara’s teachings were honestly the catalyst that helped me change my life. As of today, I have a masters degree and work at a mission-oriented nonprofit, which I a... more

  • Has gone downhill

Used to love this podcast. The advice used to feel more tangible, but it’s become reductionist. I get that our emotions are controlled by our thoughts, but sometimes simply “changing your thoughts” doesn’t make a very real problem go away. It’s just toxic positivity packaged differently.

  • This podcast changed how I relate to my own mind.

The thought work Kara teaches isn’t fluffy. It’s practical, honest, and sometimes uncomfortable in the best way. What sets her apart is that she doesn’t let us skip past why our thoughts are the way they are. She names it directly. Women are socialized to doubt themselves, shrink themselves, and make everyone else’s comfort more important than their own truth. That’s not a personal flaw. It’s conditioning. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it. That’s where the real work begins. Thank you Kara... more

  • Kara is in my head

I have listened to several episodes and Kara describes exactly how I feel. How did she know? I did not realize so many other women may feel this way. Right now, I am listening to the confidence compass skills and loving the episodes!

  • So great!

I discovered Kara’s podcast about a month ago and have been binge listening ever since. I often feel sad when an episode ends and cue up another one. My favorite episode so far has been “Borrow My Thoughts,” in which she shares how she changed her dating life by thinking, “Women my size have found love “ or her career by thinking, “Dumber people than me have succeeded in this area.” Since then, I find myself spontaneously coming up with useful reframes like, “I can handle doing tasks with subrou... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

474. Want a Better Financial Life? Don't Marry a Loser: A Conversation with Vivian Tu
Q: What does it mean to maximize value for money beyond price tagging?
It means focusing on spending that improves life quality, security, and the ability to achieve long-term goals, rather than simply accumulating possessions or chasing status symbols.
473. Coaching Hotline: What If I'm Truly Ugly & Stupid - & Are Vibrations Real?
Q: Is it possible that our bodies provide information before we have a thought to help us give it meaning? How should we test or think about this in a way that doesn't undermine personal agency?
The model proposed is that sensory input is always processed by the brain, which interprets signals based on past experiences to categorize and give meaning. Rather than accepting unverified claims of non-thought-based information, focus on how your thoughts guide interpretation and actions. If a belief helps you act effectively and grow, it serves you, even if you're uncertain about the mechanism.
473. Coaching Hotline: What If I'm Truly Ugly & Stupid - & Are Vibrations Real?
Q: How do energy, vibrations, and thought work relate to experiences of instant chemistry or energy healing modalities like Reiki? Is there any validity to listening to the heart or sensing information before thought?
Vibrations and energy are explained away as a misinterpretation of inputs processed by the brain. Instant chemistry and energy healing are attributed to the thought processes and expectations of the recipient; belief and attention shape perceived effects. Reiki and similar modalities may produce strong experiences because of placebo effects and the recipient's beliefs, not because of non-physical energy separate from thought. The brain integrates sensory data, past experience, and expectations to create meaning, which can feel like physical information before a conscious thought but is ultimately a product of brain processing.
473. Coaching Hotline: What If I'm Truly Ugly & Stupid - & Are Vibrations Real?
Q: Hi Kara, I've been listening to your podcast obsessively, but one thing keeps popping up. My lizard brain interferes with my thoughtwork and tells me I'm ugly, stupid, uninteresting, untalented, and incapable. How can I address this insidious thought and its associated feelings?
The answer is to treat these judgments as subjective and tested through logic rather than treated as objective truth. By reframing beliefs as thoughts that can be tested and choosing to believe a version that leads to concrete action and growth, you create real-world outcomes (getting a job, forming relationships, developing skills) even if the belief isn't literally true. If believing a positive delusion yields better results, the payoff is in the behavior and outcomes, not in the objective accuracy of the belief.
471. Coaching Hotline: Teaching Thought Work to Teens & Managing Phobias
Q: Can you offer guidance on managing your mind regarding phobias, especially when the phobia feels irrational but triggers panic and physical reactions?
Begin by accepting the phobia as your current experience and examine how you relate to it, rather than immediately solving it through anxious self-judgment. Reframe the fear, check how you describe it, and gradually introduce the idea that you can learn to manage your mind about the situation (e.g., airplanes or bridges) while avoiding resistance to the fear itself.
