  • Biblical yet legalistic

Listening to a few of these podcast, reminded me of when I attended the masters University associated with John MacArthur 20 years ago. There are some good biblical principles however these get confused with how we live out our sanctification under the power of the Holy Spirit. A lot of people in these camps denied the present ministry the Holy Spirit, and therefore have to rely on a perfect paradigm and a methodology to change people.

  • Biblical wisdom for everyday believers

This podcast is an incredible resource not only to Biblical counselors but for those who are attempting to deal with their own problems biblically along with the problems of others that they care deeply about. Dr. Johnson and his guests are excellent and provide a thoroughly Biblical take on current issues. I am grateful for their firm stance upon the sufficiency of God’s Word and the compassion that they bring to the topics they discuss.

  • Awful interviewer

You never shut up. You always interrupt your own questions with about 10 other comma slices. Ask a question shut up and hear the answer. Repeat.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TIL 579: Counseling Procrastinators (feat. Jim Newheiser)
Q: How can individuals responsibly say no and seek counsel when faced with requests that threaten to overwhelm their schedule?
Newheiser suggests seeking counsel from spouses and trusted friends, keeping the overall mission in view, and recognizing that prudent time management requires prayerful dependence on God to discern best use of one's time and to avoid a spirit of legalism in obligations.
TIL 579: Counseling Procrastinators (feat. Jim Newheiser)
Q: Give some practical help for procrastinators, particularly the three P's: prioritize, plan, and protect.
The guest outlines a framework: prioritize based on Scripture and God-given calling, plan time to fulfill those priorities with Proverbs 21.5 guiding diligent planning, and protect time from distractions and non-essential commitments, recognizing that saying yes to one thing often means saying no to others, especially in ministry and family life.
TIL 579: Counseling Procrastinators (feat. Jim Newheiser)
Q: Talk about the consequences that arise when procrastinators procrastinate, especially in relationships and daily responsibilities.
Newheiser highlights practical consequences such as academic probation for students, marital conflict over neglected chores, and more generally how delaying duties can harm relationships and personal stewardship of time. He also illustrates how procrastination can escalate into more serious problems if not addressed.
TIL 579: Counseling Procrastinators (feat. Jim Newheiser)
Q: Talk just for a second, maybe about the concept of procrastination and why it is that people may tend to procrastinate.
Jim Newheiser explains that people procrastinate for a variety of reasons, including personality traits, laziness, and perfectionism, but emphasizes that Scripture calls believers to responsibility and to weigh the consequences of delaying commitments (citing Proverbs 3.27 and related passages). He also notes the importance of recognizing underlying heart issues rather than excusing procrastination.
TIL 575: Counseling Toward Commitment (feat. Keith Evans)
Q: How does Paul's approach model counseling toward gospel obedience without manipulation or undue pressure?
Paul refrains from coercive tactics and instead appeals as a brother in Christ, using sincere affirmation and a well-considered request to motivate transformation rather than manipulation. This approach highlights the counselor's aim to restore and empower the counselee to choose what is right out of genuine faith and love for Christ, rather than through authority or threats.
