  • Great topics and speakers despite narration feeling juvenile

I enjoy the guest perspectives tremendously.

Trying for helpful feedback here- the narration feels oddly repetitive and not adding value. I think the intention is to summarize but at times results in a cringey restating that doesn’t help to further the story much. My unsolicited advice, would be to assume the listener understood the guest’s explanation the first time and wait until close to the end to summarize key concepts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

206. Paul Krugman talks trade, industrial policy, and Trump
Q: What do you think President Trump gets right about trade?
It's really hard to see any coherent conception in what's going on now, especially his fixation on bilateral trade imbalances, which is not a valid criterion.
206. Paul Krugman talks trade, industrial policy, and Trump
Q: What strikes you as being the most important things that we have to look out for?
Industrial policy could lead to a lot of waste and higher costs. It's important we don't end up subsidizing industries that shouldn't be on the list and fall into political capture.
206. Paul Krugman talks trade, industrial policy, and Trump
Q: What do you think are the main drivers behind why we've started to go down this path?
The world is a much more dangerous place than we ever imagined, and reliance on foreign countries for crucial stuff poses risks that we hadn't thought of. National security has become a significant argument for industrial policy.
206. Paul Krugman talks trade, industrial policy, and Trump
Q: When you were at the forefront of really thinking about these agglomeration issues, how much thinking was there about the potential costs?
I would say that I devoted approximately zero time to worrying about the risks. The world just seemed like a much less risky place then, probably because we were kind of blind.
204. Is Europe ready for Trump?
Q: In your view, has the European perspective on China changed over the last few years?
Rupert notes an increased critical view of China in response to economic practices while maintaining the need for cooperation in non-problematic areas.
