  • Jim Abrams the GOAT!

Always love this podcast listened to so many great episodes too many to list and there is always a nugget or pages of notes and action items to take and implement in my HVAC & plumbing business. I was able to find Jim’s book contractors guide to greatness and knew I had to read it after the podcast and while I didn’t have to spend $5k on eBay to get mine I’m sure it has 100X or more than that value inside. Thanks y’all keep up the great show you are an invaluable resource to our trades!!!

How Redwood Services Built a $1.1B Home Services Platform | VIP Guests Richard Lewis & John Conway
Q: What part of the home service industry is broken, but nobody wants to admit it?
Employee retention and turnover are the core issues; turnover of 40-60% annually hinders consistent growth, along with marketing inefficiencies and the leakage in the sales funnel that undermines profitability.
Inside a $67M Family-Owned Home Services Business | VIP Guest Hugh Joyce
Q: What part of the home services industry do you think is broken, and what would you fix?
The biggest issue is the ability to manage minutes and tech time; without reliable minute-by-minute tracking and the right tech solutions, you can't gamify the business or fairly compensate technicians.
Inside a $67M Family-Owned Home Services Business | VIP Guest Hugh Joyce
Q: How did you approach acquisitions and what models do you prefer?
We prefer acquiring and rebranding with centralized operations rather than fully integrating names; focus is on maintaining value and moving quickly with smaller, manageable acquisitions and partnering where helpful.
Inside the $2.5B Blackstone Deal with Champions Group
Q: Why did the investors value the membership program so highly, and how did it affect valuation?
The membership program provided predictable revenue streams, enabled cross-selling opportunities (e.g., plumbing, electrical, and safety inspections), and reduced dependency on weather, all of which contributed to a lower risk profile and a higher valuation multiple for the business.
I Shot Bin Laden In the Face 3 Times: The Robert O'Neil Story from RYNOx
Q: How did you manage fear and stay focused during the mission?
By accepting fear as natural but not letting panic take over, and by counting, breathing, and sticking to the plan while staying adaptable to changing circumstances.
